I'm in a book!!

Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Yesterday afternoon, I heard the UPS truck pull up in front of our house. Although I've ordered quite an extensive amount of things for my Quilt Market booth (just two more weeks!), I wasn't expecting anything yesterday. He handed me a package from F+W Media and inside was a book - Beyond the Block.

I had absolutely no idea why this book came to me. I first checked the address on the package to see if it was delivered to the wrong address. Nope. Then I checked the author's name to see if it was a friend. Nope. I checked the receipt to see if it was a gift. Nope. So I shrugged my shoulders and fanned the pages.

Then this happened: WHAAATTTTT?!?!?!?!?!? Go back!!!! What was that?!?!? THAT'S MY QUILT!!!

The 3-Hour Quilt

Monday, April 29, 2019

This month's Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to use the Accuquilt Go! cutting machine to make a 40" square baby quilt. As you know, I'm smack in the middle of Quilt Market prep, so I really don't have time to do anything not related to Market, but I'm not one to skip out on a commitment! So I made decisions on what to make and how to make it based on what would be the fastest.

This three hour baby quilt is so quick and easy!

The result is this 40" square baby quilt that took me exactly 3 hours to make!

Pineapple Twist pattern release!

Monday, April 22, 2019

The countdown is on for Market! Just three more weeks!

I have SIX new print patterns releasing to quilt shops at Market, and today I'm sharing the next one with you! (Finial, Hee-Haw, and Cotton Candy are the first three. I'll share the other two in the next two weeks!)

Pineapple Twist is finally available as a stand-alone pattern!

A (Logo) Banner Day!

Friday, April 19, 2019

Ever since starting Slice of Pi Quilts in 2016, I have wanted to make a quilt using my business logo. But I never had a reason to do it - until now!

A quilt made from my logo

Quilt Market is just four weeks away. This week, I finished the last of my four new patterns (and the quilts!) that I will be releasing at Market, and my husband started building my booth. Then I started on my logo quilt.

Ahoy! It's a Boy!

Monday, April 15, 2019

When my brother was in college, he worked one summer at a restaurant in Gulf Shores, Alabama called The Hangout. He wasn't just any regular server or cook though, he was a pirate!

As soon as he and his wife announced they were pregnant with a boy, I knew a pirate quilt would be perfect!

I admit, I have been collecting pirate fabrics for several years just in case this day would come. I can't tell you how ecstatic I was when I knew I'd be able to use them!

I See You! + TGIFF

Thursday, April 11, 2019

The first 4-H club in our town started in the fall, and we were eager to get our oldest son involved. He's just five, and many others in the club are also quite young. Each month, our club does a different activity to give the kids an experience that might be new to them. We've decorated cupcakes, learned about goats, rabbits, and chickens, and done arts and crafts. Last month, I was signed up to teach about quilting!

At last month's meeting, each 4-Her made one monster block, then I finished the quilt before this month's meeting and documented the whole process in our club's Facebook group so the kids could see what goes on behind the scenes. I revealed the quilt to the kids this week at our monthly meeting, and it was quite a hit!

Cotton Candy Quilt Pattern Release! + TGIFF

When I taught middle school math in Las Vegas, I became good friends with the geography teacher two doors down from my classroom. Seven years later, we both live in Kansas City, we both have three boys, and we both own our own business! It was a no-brainer to collaborate on a Cotton Candy quilt!

Purple Orange Peels

Sunday, March 31, 2019

I am knee deep in Quilt Market prep. Contracts, logistics, writing new quilt patterns, booth design, quilt making, marketing...the list is a mile long. So March's Island Batik ambassador quilt got squeezed in at the end of the month among a lot of other things!

A few months ago, I made the End Game mini quilt with some epic fussy cutting. Since then, I've had several requests for a fussy cutting tutorial. So with Jemima's permission, I'm going to share my process with you!

How to take quilt photos on ANY wall

Sunday, February 24, 2019

So you made a beautiful quilt and want to share it with the quilty world, but how do you take a photo of it??

How to take quilt photos on any wall

Maybe the quilt is too large for a friend to hold. Or maybe you don't have a friend that can help you. Or maybe you don't have any place in your home to photograph it.

Well, look no further! Here's what to do!

Calculator Quilt + Old Book Blog Hop

Friday, February 22, 2019

This week, Bea of Beaquilter is hosting the "Dust Off a Quilt Book" Blog Hop. The idea is to use a quilt book that you've had sitting around on a shelf for awhile, but have never gotten around to making something from it. I *know* you can all relate to that! Just this little push of getting together with some blogging friends for a blog hop helped me move a "want to make" quilt to the top of the done pile!

Little Pink Peonies

Saturday, February 16, 2019

So, I've had this post written since November. But I haven't published it because when I mailed the quilt to my friend, USPS LOST it!! Fast forward three months. I've remade the quilt, mailed it, and my friend received the new one (phew!), so now I can share the saga with you here.

In early November, Hawthorne Supply Co. sent their weekly newsletter just to me. I mean, I'm sure it went to other people too, but really, it was meant just for me.

A friend of mine had a baby in October, and I just couldn't decide what kind of quilt to make her new little girl. However, when the Hawthorne newsletter featured a few of their own fall themed fabrics, I knew it was exactly what my friend would love!

This trendy floral whole cloth quilt with soft minky back is the perfect baby quilt for a girl!

LET'S DO THIS!

Sunday, February 10, 2019

The first challenge for the 2019 Island Batik ambassadors is to make a mini quilt. And it just so happens that the third challenge for Project Quilting is to make something bigger than 9" x 16". So it was the perfect time for a two-fer!

The first box of the year (we will get a second box of goodies in the summer) arrived a couple weeks ago, but this time there was a BIG surprise - an equally as large box from Accuquilt!

Worsley Wallet

Monday, January 21, 2019

Last month, my very good friend Laura (we have the same name!) had to have surgery. Since she lives 1,300 miles away, I felt a bit distant and unsure how to help her during recovery. The usual taking meals to her family and dropping by for a visit weren't options. I did ship her a care package with yummy treats and fun things to do, but I felt the pull for something more personal.

I decided that I would make something for her on her surgery day so that I could pray for her and keep her on my mind while sewing. It felt like the best way to feel close to her even when so far apart.

2018 in Quilts

Saturday, January 5, 2019

Are you sitting down? I'm going to share with you my final quilt count for 2018! And it's a bit mind-blowing! (But after making 39 baby quilts for charity on the last five days of the year, the number might not be that surprising!)

(Drumroll...)

My final quilt count for 2018 was 105 quilts!

End Game Mini Quilt

Friday, January 4, 2019

A few months ago, Jemima at Tied with a Ribbon posted on Instagram that she was looking for people to test her new End Game quilt pattern. As a pattern designer myself, I really enjoy testing and editing other designers' patterns. It goes with the philosophy that like a rising tide, we all rise together. The industry grows and gets better when we all work to lift each other up. Jemima is releasing the pattern today, so I can finally share my version with you!

The End Game pattern has directions for both a large 62"x72" throw and a 20"x22" mini quilt. I was to test the mini version with one caveat: fussy cut the fabrics.
