Pineapple Twist pattern release!

The countdown is on for Market! Just three more weeks!

I have SIX new print patterns releasing to quilt shops at Market, and today I'm sharing the next one with you! (Finial, Hee-Haw, and Cotton Candy are the first three. I'll share the other two in the next two weeks!)

Pineapple Twist is finally available as a stand-alone pattern!

I first made this quilt in September 2016 (read about it here) as part of a selvage challenge. Then the pattern for that version was in Make Modern magazine in July 2017 (read about that here).

I wanted to expand the pattern to include more sizes, a scrappy background, and prairie points instead of selvages. And now in April 2019, that's finally done! Ha!

This version started with a 2 1/2" strip pack of Flea Market fabrics by Island Batik. The rich golden yellows, deep teals, and muted greens screamed PINEAPPLE to me! When I got the pack in my Island Batik ambassador box, I knew it was finally time to release the Pineapple Twist pattern!

I added some coordinating fabrics from my Island Batik stash, and then decided the muted greens weren't the right fit. According to my husband, they were more "dead pineapple" than "tropical," so I dug out some brighter greens to use.

The pattern is perfect for scraps and 2 1/2" strips.

The pineapple is made with prairie points. I absolutely love the texture you get from using them this way!

Of course I used Aurifil thread for all the piecing and quilting! I used 50wt Turquoise #2810 for piecing and quilting the background fabric. 50wt Spring Green #1231 was perfect for the raw edge applique of the crown.

Did I mention the texture?? I just want to pet it every time I see it!

For quilting, I used the Aurifil 50wt in Turquoise to quilt wavy horizontal lines on my longarm, avoiding the crown and pineapple. I used silk batting from Hobbs. This is my second time using the silk batting, and it still amazes me! It quilts beautifully, and has a fantastic drape to it!

I finished the quilt with a golden yellow binding from the Flea Market line.

The description on the pattern is: "Pineapple Twist uses traditional prairie points in a new and modern way to create irresistible texture! This intermediate-level pattern combines traditional piecing, raw-edge applique, and prairie points and includes directions for three sizes from mini to throw."

The pattern is available as a pdf in my Etsy shop, and the printed patterns should arrive in time for Market!

  1. All that texture is so fun! I'd want to touch it all the time, too :) It's kind of amusing to see the progression it took to finally bring this one to life as a stand alone pattern, lol. Now I don't feel quite so bad about the ones I have hanging out, waiting for their turn to get finished up.

  3. Love the way you made your pineapple with the prairie points!! When I first started quilting (11 years ago) I made an applique wall hanging that has a pine tree done with prairie points just like your pineapple, except even denser. What fun...I need to play with that again!!
