Double the fun!

One of my childhood friends is expecting twins! Of course I wanted to make quilts!

My favorite baby quilt to make is what I've dubbed the Three Hour Quilt. And honestly, I might rename it to the Two Hour Quilt. I can make the whole quilt from start to finish in only two hours!! Which means I could make two of them in just four hours!

I've made this same quilt a few times before. I don't normally like to make the same thing more than once, but when it only takes a couple hours, it's a great go-to baby quilt! You can read about all the other ones I've made here, here, here, here, and here.

When I was cutting the Garden Journal fabric for this quilt, I cut all the leftovers into 2 1/2" squares. They were perfect to use for these two baby quilts!

I have several bolts of solid colors on hand, and two of them matched the Garden Journal fabric perfectly! Kona Bright Periwinkle and Painter's Palette Coral. I cut 42" pieces of each to use as the background for each of the quilts. (42" so that the piece was as close to square as possible.) I also cut four 2 1/4" width of fabric strips of each color to use for the binding.

I cut a piece about 1 1/3 yards long from my bolt of white and gray backing fabric, then cut that in half to get two pieces of backing fabric. I also had some leftovers of Warm & Natural batting that were a great size to use too.

I packed all the pieces up and took them with me to the quilt retreat I went to a few weeks ago. I figured it would be the perfect time to get a time lapse video of the process!

Here's a quick outline for making a two-hour quilt:

Tape backing fabric to a table.

Lay batting on top and smooth.

Lay background fabric on top and smooth.

Use the fabric's center fold line and a ruler to place 2 1/2" squares 2 1/2" apart.

Repeat to make a 6x6 or 7x7 grid of squares.

Use curved safety pins to baste the sandwich, placing one pin through each square.

Using a walking foot, stitch straight lines from one side of the quilt to the other so that the line is 1/4" inside the raw edge of the squares.

Repeat for all rows and columns so each square is stitched on all four sides.

Trim the edges of the quilt.

Machine bind.

Wash, dry, and trim away loose threads.

Oh, and taking some pictures for your blog would be extra helpful. It was only the day after the baby shower did I realize I never took any photos of the finished quilts. Blogger fail.

Maybe the new mom will take pictures of the twins on the quilts and share them with me. If so, I'll update this post in a few months. Until then, enjoy this photo as I was getting ready to put them in the washer. They came out super soft and cuddly and ready to be loved. You'll just have to use your imagination for that part!
