Paper Chain Family - FREE Quilt Block

Tuesday, October 6, 2020

This month's Quilt Block Mania theme is Family! Dozens of pattern designers have come together to share FREE quilt blocks with you every month! Carolina from AlwaysExpectMoore is spearheading the project, and it is so fun to see what everyone comes up with each month!

Last year, when I made this quilt, I also made a cute "paper" chain made from fabric. The people are holding hands, and it creates hearts in-between them.

I really love the paper chain, and it sits on a shelf in my sewing studio. When this month's prompt was "family," I knew the paper chain people needed to be featured again!

The Paper Chain Family quilt block uses applique for a quick and easy finish. I prefer using Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for this since it's tacky before pressing. That way you can move and reposition the people until they're exactly how you like them.

The block looks good in lots of bright colors, just a couple colors, or even just one color for the family, or white like paper snowflakes!

Ooh! Look at that as a throw quilt!

When testing the block, I used a bright mix of my Island Batik scraps for the people and Kona White for the background. I haven't stitched my people down yet, but I plan to use matching colors of Aurifil 50wt thread.

The block just makes me smile! I love the hearts in-between the people, but I also love the secondary design created in the middle of the block!

The block could be used to represent family, but it's also great for a circle of friends, a team, or even children for a teacher! Wouldn't it be a great quilt label??

And don't limit yourself to quilts! You could use the block as a panel on a tote bag too!

  8. Love this and the thought of paper dolls and chains. The secondary pattern created by the legs is an opportunity for something. Need to ponder.
