Double Take

This month's Island Batik ambassador challenge was to create a quilt with a secondary design. A secondary design is one in which some surprising design appears when you put the blocks together - making you do a double take!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

I started this month's challenge by scouring Pinterest for ideas. I found a quilt design that I absolutely loved (see it here), but ultimately knew I would not have the time to make it this month. So I went with my second choice, the Fizzy Block by Play Crafts. It's a free block tutorial on the Blossom Heart Quilts blog as part of The Bee Hive quilt block series.

I went with a favorite color combo - purple and teal. I went through all the fabrics Island Batik has sent me and pulled every rich purple and teal I could find. (I ultimately took out that light purple dot. It just didn't have the same vibe as the rest.)

Next, I used the template that Alyce has on the tutorial post to cut the drunkard's path pieces. I just printed the template on regular copy paper and cut the fabrics with a rotary cutter by cutting along the edge of the templates.

I sewed the pieces together using Aurifil 50wt thread in Dark Dusty Grape #2581.

A quick press made the blocks lay flat.

And a quick trim made them all the perfect size.

It takes four drunkard's path blocks to make the Fizzy Block.

Then rotating every other block when laying them out creates an amazing secondary design!

I loaded the quilt on my new-to-me longarm (read more about it here) with a sheet for the backing. Now, that's definitely something I've never tried before! And honestly, I don't love it. But I did not have enough matching fabric for the back, and I didn't have time to piece it. So I went through my stash and had half of a twin sheet leftover from making curtains for my firstborn's nursery (over five years ago!). It was the perfect size and color, so it won the argument. The batting is Warm & Natural from The Warm Co.

For thread, I used the Aurifil 50wt Dark Dusty Grape #2581 and Aurifil 50wt Bright Turquoise #5005.

When I bought my longarm, the seller was adamant about what type of thread I needed to use. She said it only liked one kind of polyester thread. Well, look who's proving that wrong! Aurifil for everything!!

I started by quilting a double curve in all of the purple pieces. Since my longarm can not accommodate rulers (or should I say, I haven't outsmarted it yet!), I have to freehand everything. (The foot hops too high for rulers. So far, the hopping distance can not be adjusted and the foot can not be changed. But I'm brainstorming some ideas!) This led to some very imperfect curves.

I free motioned a meander design in all of the teal fabrics. Definitely a much more manageable quilting design for me!

Once finished, I machine stitched the binding on using one of the dark purples.

I absolutely love the deep saturated purples and teals in this quilt!

And I also love the design! This is one I would love to make again! The blocks are so simple to make, but the end result has such a wow factor!

This is the first quilt finished in our new house!

The quilt measures 48" square and is my 34th quilt finish for the year!

I have a secret quilt to make this coming week. In fact, it uses purple and teal Island Batik fabrics too! It will be in a magazine in January, so I won't be able to share it until then.

Next month is an Island Batik blog hop. Each ambassador will be sharing quilts made with new fabrics that are just showing up in stores. I am SO excited for my quilt idea for the blog hop! I haven't started it yet though, so I'm crossing my fingers it will work. I'll be sharing lots of sneak peeks on Instagram and Facebook before the big reveal, so be sure to follow me there to see what crazy things I'm up to!

  15. That quilt is absolutely stunning! The block is really nice, and the contrast of the rich purples and bright teals makes it shine. Perhaps I'll have to get over my fear of curves and make this as a baby quilt.
