Calculator Quilt + Old Book Blog Hop

This week, Bea of Beaquilter is hosting the "Dust Off a Quilt Book" Blog Hop. The idea is to use a quilt book that you've had sitting around on a shelf for awhile, but have never gotten around to making something from it. I *know* you can all relate to that! Just this little push of getting together with some blogging friends for a blog hop helped me move a "want to make" quilt to the top of the done pile!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

In my small stash of quilty books, I have one of my all-time favorites, Sew Adorkable. The book is by Samarra Khaja and was published in 2015 (and still available on Amazon for a great price!). I absolutely love so many of the projects in the book (a notebook paper shower curtain, a pencil skirt with pencils appliqued on it, a candy dots quilt...), but there's one project that I've wanted to make ever since I first saw it: a calculator quilt. (I'm a math geek through and through!)

The quilt in the book is a giant 71" x 94 1/2". I decided to halve all the measurements to make a baby version that would be 35 1/2" x 47 1/4". I love making quilts where the backing can be WOF (width of fabric)!

Fabrics for calculator quilt

I found the cutest geeky flannel print at Jo-Ann's for the backing, then found solids in my stash to match. Some are Kona, some are JoAnn, and the light gray is Island Batik.

To make the calculator numbers, I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 and Kona Black.

Once traced, cut, and pressed into place, I used 50wt Aurifil in Black to stitch about 1/8" from the raw edges of the numbers to secure them to the quilt top.

The quilt came together super quick!

I pin basted the quilt with Warm & Natural batting.

Using 50wt Aurifil #2605 Grey, I used my domestic machine to free-motion quilt squares and rectangles.

After quilting, I machine sewed (tutorial here) the binding using Kona Black.

As a math geek, this quilt gives me all the feels!

And when I added a baby in a pi onesie. Oh! I can't take all the cuteness!!

I mean, seriously. (Elijah is 5 months old already!)

I can't believe it took me this long to finally move this quilt to the top of the queue! Thank you, Bea, for the push to make something from my favorite quilty book!

How about you?? Do you have a stash of quilty books screaming for their day in the spotlight? Take a look at what you have and make something!

  15. Fantastic finish and great baby model. I like that you were able to reduce the size and get a quilt that looks as cute as that. The color choices are so great. I've been doing the machine stitched binding for about a year on all my quilts that are going to be well-used. It goes fast and it looks nice. Repetition allows me to continue improving my technique.

  19. Oh my goodness, this quilt brings up memories of 7th grade math class and figuring out what words you could create on the calculator screen! Though I do not recall ridiculously cute babies in that class. This is super fun, and I now really want a pencil skirt with pencils on it.

  20. So many things to comment on it's hard to know where to begin, lol! I love that picture of Elijah where the quilt is folded over him and he has the biggest grin. How adorable! The quilt is so fun and fabulous and brings back memories of making words on the calculator in class :) The pencil skirt on the cover of the book is great, too.

  21. Oh my gosh! I've seen that book and have wanted to make that quilt too! Yours turned out gorgeous and a great idea to make it half the size. I like quilts that don't require pieced backing too! Of course I don't have a Cutie Pi to model it so it is better that you made it!

  22. What a fun book and quilt! Thank goodness you had a cutie π to put on it. He is looking great and growing so fast!

  28. Hi Laura! Aww, this is the cutest thing I've seen today . . . and the quilt isn't bad either. Little Elijah really makes the quilt all the more lovable if that's even possible. What a fun and easy concept and I love your choices for the fabrics and quilting. ~smile~ Roseanne
