If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
PBS Fabrics sent me their solid fabrics (called Painter's Palette Solids) that coordinated with the Over the Rainbow fabrics. The colors are Mauve, Navy, Cracked Ice, Aluminum, Woodsman, Moss, and Shell Pink. There is also White for the background.
The pattern has a wonderful surprise - if you make the larger baby quilt, you can also make a smaller NICU sized baby quilt at the same time! I cut the pieces for both and worked on them simultaneously.
The quilt top is just nine pieces, so it goes together quickly. (My favorite kind of quilt!!)
I decided to mimic the rainbow front on the back too, then pin basted the baby quilt with Warm & Natural batting.
For the quilting on the baby quilt, I free motioned clouds using 50wt Aurifil #2024 White on my domestic Juki.
For the NICU size quilt, I used my laser to quilt vertical straight lines with my walking foot.
I machine bound both quilts with the stripe from the Over the Rainbow collection. It was the perfect finishing touch!
The baby quilt is 36" square, and has a fun mini rainbow on the back!
The back of the mini uses the same two rainbow prints (this one and this one). I had planned to have plain backs (the small rainbow print fabric on the baby quilt and the large rainbow print on the NICU quilt), but my husband suggested adding mini rainbows, and it turned out way more fun than the plain back would have been!
The NICU quilt is 18" square.
I love that the pattern makes two quilts at the same time! If you only want to make the baby quilt, you could donate the NICU quilt to your local hospital! Wouldn't that be such a fun surprise for a family there?!?
I also decided to make a fun cloud taggie toy while I had the scraps out!
I have previously made them with ribbons, but this time I made my own "ribbons" from the fabric scraps!
I didn't have any stuffing on hand, so I cut up some batting scraps into tiny squares. It worked great!
Would you be interested in a tutorial for making these?? Such a cute addition if you're gifting the quilt!
Photo shoots with my "baby" are getting much harder these days!
I designed the Bundle of Joy quilt to celebrate our rainbow baby, and he is turning ONE this week! It was the perfect quilt to make to celebrate this milestone!
The Bundle of Joy quilt is a great reminder to count your rainbows, not your storms.

So cute!! And you just gave me a great idea for all the really scrappy pieces of batting I just came across tonight. I was actually thinking of tossing them out to gain drawer space. I think I will chop them up instead and store them in a bag in the closet for stuffing!!

I would love a tutorial for making these!! They are awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteThose are both so sweet, especially the little one. I really like the rainbow in the muted colorway.
ReplyDeleteThat laser contraption looks really handy! I love your baby quilt, and the cloud quilting complements the rainbow beautifully.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Little one!! What a great quilt- its beautiful and a great way to showcase those fabrics!
ReplyDeleteWow, 1 already! He is adorable and the quilts are fabulous - of course. Love the rainbow and what a fun idea to make 2.
ReplyDeleteI love every one of those pictures of quilt and boy. It hardly seems possible it's a whole year! This was a great design choice, and I'm glad you took your husband's advice!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful quilt!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the great quilt (I love the binding and the back!) and your son's first birthday :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Laura! What a sweet quilt model you have!! And he's turning ONE already. How is that possible?! And yes indeed, let's celebrate the rainbows and forget about the storms. Your quilt is fabulous - both of them. And the color palette is so lovely as well - rather unexpected and yet not, especially with that fabulous backing fabric. This is such a win/win, as is the little tag toy. I love the idea of cutting up your batting scraps for the filling. Brilliant. Thanks for linking up today - I appreciate it very much. ~smile~ Roseanne P.S. A new laser light?! I'll have to check that out - I still use the other idea you shared.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have been on the same wavelength, cutting up batting to use as stuffing :) I love this little quilt and its accompanying taggie toy. And you little model is pretty adorable!
ReplyDeleteVery cute!
ReplyDeleteTypical Laura--why make one quilt when you can make two plus a pillow?!?? Gorgeous, and your model is the most charming cloudholder ever. Thanks for linking up to What I Made Monday.
ReplyDeleteIf the two quilts weren't cute enough that taggie just slays me with its cuteness.
ReplyDeleteSo cute, and I love the cloud. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down.
ReplyDeleteLove the message behind this quilt, I am sure it will touch many people who have been through similar griefs. I can't believe your baby is nearly one!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet boy. Can't believe he's one year old already! And you're right, your rainbow quilt is the perfect way to celebrate. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss!
