Going Bat Crazy!

Last month, Missouri Star sent me a bundle of Halloween fabrics to sew into a Bat Crazy quilt!

It was such a happy stack of fabric! The collection name is Hey Boo, and it was designed by Lella Boutique for Moda. I love the subtle colors that aren't as bright as the usual Halloween colors!

I chose Moda Bella solid fabric in Charcoal for the bats and Aurifil 50wt thread in Dark Pewter to match.

The Bat Crazy pattern uses a clever technique for making the bats that is similar to sewing a cathedral window quilt. You first sew only squares and rectangles together, but then you go back and stitch down the wings to create the illusion of curves.

This quilt traveled quite a bit while I was working on it! I first cut the pieces when on a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska with my mom, then I sewed the bat blocks while at a quilt retreat in Arkansas.

Then I came home to Missouri to finish it up!

I quilted it with 80/20 cotton batting from Batting Super Sale. And I used my SewTites Magnums to load my backing fabric to the longarm.

Just like the Bat Crazy cover quilt (see that one HERE), I chose to quilt around the bats.

Then I machine sewed on the binding in the same Charcoal solid fabric. (Tutorial for machine sewing binding HERE.)

I love how this quilt turned out so differently than the cover quilt! The prints really add something special to this one!

My family has never celebrated Halloween in a big way, but we did have minimal decorations and my mom usually made my costumes.

Now as an adult, I don't own many Halloween decorations, but I'm excited to have quilts to use!

  1. Your quilt is cute but I'm so NOT ready to think about autumn yet! The bat quilt will make a great Halloween decoration. Happy stitching!
