This month, many of the ambassadors are sharing the newest Island Batik fabrics with you in the "A Piece of... Blog Hop." Today is my day to share the Blue Sea collection with you!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
The story of this quilt starts way back in February! That's when I got my first ambassador box for 2019. Inside was a half-yard bundle of the Blue Sea collection.
The collection was *PERFECT* for a quilt design I was planning to release at Quilt Market in May, so I used the fabrics to make the Hydra quilt. (Read more about that quilt here.)

- Link to paper pattern
All that was left was a small stack of scraps. (Ask your favorite quilt shop to order the Blue Sea collection!)
I knew the November challenge was to use those fabrics to make a throw sized quilt, so after Market, I began thinking about how to make that little pile go much farther than it typically would in a quilt.
That's when the idea of this quilt was born.
I decided to purchase the AccuQuilt die for cutting tiny circles. There was no way I was going to hand cut all those circles!!
Now, up to this point, the quilt had been a beautiful idea, but making the dream into a reality was going to be much harder than it seemed! I wasn't quite sure about a few of the steps, but decided the best way to figure it out would be to just start making the quilt!
I pressed Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 onto the back of all the fabric scraps.
Then I got out my AccuQuilt Go! cutter and cut out 1,000 circles! (It could be more, but I didn't count them.)
It was super easy, and speaking from experience, SO MUCH FASTER than hand cutting!!
I cut through all the leftover fabric in no time!
I kept the fabrics sorted into three piles - light, medium, and dark.
Here's a peek at the scraps - before I decided I needed more circles!
Now it was time to just dive in!
I had one 4-yard piece of Island Batik Whip Cream. So I cut that into two 72" long pieces, then sewed the two pieces together along the selvage edge to create the quilt top background piece.
I printed an octopus clip art picture and drew gridlines on it. Then I used straight pins in the top to mark where each grid line was.
To get started, I used the grid drawing and my Sewline Air Soluble marker to draw the basic outline of the octupus.
I used medium-colored dots to outline the head.
It took a couple attempsts to get the eyes just right!
Then I filled in the head with the light-colored dots.
The process made quite a mess!
I was very cautiously optimistic that it was going to work!
My favorite thing about using Lite Steam-A-Seam 2, is that the fusible is sticky. This allows pieces to be moved and rearranged while the piece is vertical on the wall. This really helped me be able to get the look I wanted!
I ran out of light and medium colored circles before I was finished, so it took some creative thinking to figure out how to make it work!
The shade of the circles really makes the effect work!
I am so pleased with how it turned out!!
I plan to use my longarm for the quilting. I'm thinking of doing very large circles/pebbles in the background, and much smaller circles over the octopus. I'm not going to sew all those circles down, so I'll have to try hard to stitch over every circle so they won't fall off in the wash. Do you have any other ideas??
I will trim the quilt to 72" square and bind it using a blue or purple batik. I plan to finish this quilt still this week!
Now for a giveaway!!

Amazing collage! And a great idea to get that circle die for cutting the circles, you'd get RSI trying to do this by hand!

ReplyDeleteWow just wow. Your quilt is unbelievable. How many hours did you put in. My WIP I need to finish is a memory quilt. I have titled it yesterday’s memories. Memories of people who have gone onto glory.

ReplyDeleteLaura I couldn’t imagine cutting those circles (even with help) Beautiful turnout. I love the gradations!

Laura, amazing!!! Great way to make due with your leftover bits and turn it into a full blown awesome quilt!!! And your octopus doesn't look menacing at all--he looks a bit in wonder.
ReplyDeleteYour octopus is incredible Laura, even with the tiniest scraps you can make art! I have been amazed so many times with your quilty artworks, and you have inspired me so many times. Keep on surprising us with new ideas and projects in the years to come, I am following your journey!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous use of the fabrics and the theme you were given!
ReplyDeleteAs for wip's I fit in with the hop theme of lots of pieces. I have been working on a quilt that is hundreds of 2 inch squares.I have two borders left to add and the top will be done.
Brilliant idea for making it work! The WIP I really want to finish is one is an "Odd shaped" chunk that needs made square-ish and made into a quilt. I started it years ago and didn't know where to go with it. I have a plan now when I just get time to work on it.
ReplyDeleteWow! I can't even imagine all those circles to work wit. I have been working on a paper pieced Pineapple quilt for 4 yrs now. I would love to get it finished sometime. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great use of scraps! I have a wall hanging WIP for my daughter and a throw size quilt top waiting to be sandwiched together.

ReplyDeleteI follow you by mail and on Instagram. Another beautiful quilt! I couldn't imagine what all the circles were for.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is one incredible octopus. When I did my mosaic I went around each piece - these circles will be tough to do that, even going over each one a nightmare. However, as you know, the end result will be worth it.
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed reading this blog and am inspired to try a mosaic soon. Working with a friend on making a dozen lap sized quilts for people protecting their environment and risking arrest and discrimination. Also making 10 t-shift pillows to donate for a fundraiser.

This is really a one-of-a-kind art piece. I'm going to check out that FB group - what a cool idea. Sounds like fun. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteNow that's a labor of love. What a great eye for color and design. Not everyone would pull that one off. I'm inspired!
ReplyDeleteMy GONNA FINISH IT BEFORE END OF YEAR WIP is a queen size 1" epp quilt, it's 97% complete...after working on it for the last 4 years. Oh, I LOVE your octopus!!! I did a McKenna Ryan fusible applique and I just made sure I quilted on every single little piece of fused fabric. With your pebbles, I would just make sure that I went around every single circle, with the circle determining the size of the pebble. It will be fine. I just finished piecing and sandwiching a little quilt for grandson #1 because he loved the one I made for grandson #2. I need to get it quilted and bound so I can mail it off before the end of the week.

ReplyDeleteYour ideas always, always amaze me! Your octopus really appears dimensional and in motion! So very cool. My current WIP has been laid out on my sewing room floor for about 2 weeks. It's a half log cabin runner made from scraps. Life has been too busy lately for me to sew! Poo!

My WIP is almost done. It is a large lap quilt that will be a Christmas present. It's made with an Island Batik collection too.
ReplyDeleteI followed you on Instagram.
ReplyDeleteSo WOW! What a great quilt. I've seen some quilts where the design is covered with tulle so the little pieces don't come off. If it is just the design and not the background it will be barely noticeable. One lady says she only uses black tulle but she is usually working in landscapes. Don't know if this would work for you. But honestly, this is a fantastic idea. You are such a talented lady!

ReplyDeleteI love your octopus! I follow you on Bloglovin. I have a partially finished lighthouse|sailboat quilt that needs some more rows to be able to fit my king sized bed
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing the way you did this.... not that I am octopus bound but some day something else. Amazing
ReplyDeleteLaura, I don't know much about Accuquilt. How would I get the circles to stay put while I quilt, would I iron them down and how can I stop the adhesive from gunking up my needle?
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible! My current WIP is a Faded quilt by Zen Chic 2/3 of the way through!
ReplyDeletekelleehoskins@gmail.com
You really managed to stretch that fabric. Collages are always the perfect answer and your octopus came together brilliantly with the dots. Accuquilt was the perfect answer for sure.
ReplyDeleteSo very very clever!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your octopus and would love to get the pattern. My current WIP is a curved dahlia color wheel hanging. Lots of practice in sewing curves. I follow you on Bloglovin' and have asked to join the Quilting and Sewing Deals page on FB.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your octopus and such a clever idea to make the most of your fabric! I have so many UFO’s to finish it’s hard to know which one to pick up because I need to get started on Christmas sewing. I guess they’ll stay in the UFO pile a while longer!

ReplyDeleteI am working on a baby quilt for my new grandbaby! I just need the thread I ordered to come and it will be done quickly.
ReplyDeleteThat is so amazing! I always love seeing the creative things you come up with! I am working on a mermaid wallhanging--top is finished, just waiting for inspiration on how to quilt it.
ReplyDeleteI'm tantalized by your tentacles! Have you thought of ghostly sea grasses for the quilting, to wave transparently around?
ReplyDeleteHello Laura. I love this quilt so very much and can't wait to see it finished. I just finished cutting out a gazillion circles by hand and had no idea Accuquilt had a die for that. I always learn something new when I visit your blog. Have a fabulous day!
ReplyDeleteI follow by e-mail. =)
ReplyDeleteFirst, I saw this on Island Batik's IG. Then I saw it on yours, and now I've seen all the process close ups. I was impressed with the finish, but I'm even more impressed with the process of making it. This is one beautiful quilt. I like the idea of small circles over the octopus, and was thinking about some kind of swirly curlicues in the water - a feeling of movement without being more circles. Spiral circles, that might be a better descriptor. Whatever you do, nothing can take away from the amazing quilt design you've made! I'm glad you had the Accuquilt to make this possible. =)
ReplyDeleteWow! This is
ReplyDeletefabulous! What
a design and
lovely colors.
Carla from Utah
This is amazing. It looks so realistic. I have many quilt tops to baste and quilt for myself but always manage to finish the quilts I make for other people as gifts - I guess that's more rewarding.... thank you for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have followed you on instagram for a while and love your posts
ReplyDeleteAmazing !! I am so impressed with your octopus!!
ReplyDeleteLaura, this is amazing beyond words! Seriously phenomenal! I keep pulling up pictures to look at it. My husband is also a fan, and he told me it feels like a mosaic that could have been discovered in a Roman temple or something. I am absolutely in awe of your creativity and ingenuity.
ReplyDeleteI do have a question--how did you iron it? If you placed the circles while the background was upright (like a design wall), wouldn't they fall if moved it? So did you iron them in place against a wall or something?
I read your blog via bloglovin and have since the days of the new quilt bloggers blog hop.
ReplyDeleteThat is AMAZING! Such a clever idea and it was executed to perfection. Just stunning!
ReplyDeleteI've got three WIPs right now, that I'm hoping to have finished before my third baby is due in about a month. Hand stitching the binding on a baby quilt for the new baby, big sister's snowflake quilt needs a simple border for the top to be complete, and lastly, I foolishly started another quilt and half about half the blocks made (but it was calling to me!).
How talented are you! Amazing! As a newby quilter I have 4 quilts ready to quilt! One that I am really excited about is Baskets, Blooms & Birds from Piecing The Past that is ready to start, including my quilting design idea! Thank you, Susan
