The very moment I saw a sneak peek of the Ahoy! Mermaids collection from Riley Blake, I knew I HAD to have it! It's PERFECT for my Hydra quilt pattern!! And now that I've sewn it up, I'm so giddy with how it turned out!

The Ahoy! Mermaids collection was designed by Melissa Mortenson for Riley Blake. The shipments have been a bit delayed, but the fabric is coming soon! (I found a few shops to preorder it from here!)
The fabric for this post was provided by Riley Blake Designs as part of the blog tour for the Ahoy! Mermaids fabric. The project and opinions are my own.
Do you remember this pirate quilt I made when my nephew was born? My brother worked as a pirate during college at a themed restaurant, so I am always hunting for fun pirate things for him! Last year, I found this tea towel that says "A salty pirate lives here with his beautiful mermaid." And suddenly, I knew *exactly* what quilt I would be making for my new niece!
The Hydra quilt is such a fun quilt! It has 3-D mermaid scales!
And it's quilt as you go! I made mine on my longarm, but it works just as great on a regular sewing machine too!
The background, binding, and backing fabrics are all Riley Blake Confetti Cottons solids. The background is Vivid, the backing is Navy, and the binding is Peony.
I used up some random bobbins of Aurifil 50wt when sewing the scales, then I used Aurifil 40wt #2745 Midnight Blue for assembling the quilt on the longarm. I even had the perfect color to match the binding! Aurifil 50wt #2425 Bright Pink - and now I need to reorder that one!
I always bind my quilts by machine (tutorial HERE). It's quick and easy, and they would never get done around here if I had to do it by hand!
The finished quilt is so fun!!
The scales move and blow in the wind, which is such a playful idea for a baby quilt!
This is my favorite print from the whole collection! The navy with these tiny metallic gold octopuses! All the heart eyes!!
There are whales and sea flags and mermaids and waves... so many cute prints!
I made the baby sized version of the pattern this time, and it's about 36" square. HERE is another Hydra quilt in the throw size!
If you want to make your own Hydra quilt, you can get the pattern in my Etsy shop!

I already made a quilt for my niece (this one), but she will soon be getting this one too! (A kid can never have too many quilts!) And since her brother has a pirate quilt, she *needs* a mermaid quilt!

Happy quilting!
