This week is the "Ab the Crab" block by Abbie at Sparkle On! The pattern and tutorial are on her blog HERE.
This is the eleventh of twelve blocks in the QAL By the Sea. There is a new FREE block pattern released each week throughout the quilt along, and there are prizes you can win for joining the fun! If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
For all of my QAL By the Sea blocks, I'm using an ombre stack of Kona solids and coordinating Aurifil 50wt thread. You can read more about those in this post.
The Ab the Crab block used all but one of my six aqua fabrics!
The block background is pieced, but the crab is raw-edge applique. It goes together quickly, which is just my style!
I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for my applique pieces, and I used Aurifil 50wt thread for all the piecing and applique stitching. The Steam-A-Seam is tacky, so you can keep the pieces in place without pressing them. After I laid out the whole crab, I lifted the top pieces out of the way and only pressed the bottom-most pieces and stitched those with matching thread. Then I'd lay down only the next layer, press, and stitch. I continued this until all the pieces were stitched.
It's been snowing and raining here for the past couple days, so I had to take my block pictures inside. Can you spy the two blocks with the "wrong" white in them? Me neither! It's SO hard to tell inside even with really good lighting! I do still plan to redo them though. Sigh.
There is just ONE WEEK left in the quilt along!

I love your blue crab. There is such a thing. Not all crabs are red. The Maryland crabs are red only after cooking. Not sure about blue crabs.
ReplyDeleteVery cute! I’ve been enjoying watching your quilt come to life. Very creative to use a monochromatic color scheme.
ReplyDeleteIt is adorable! Yes, the crabs in Maryland are called blue crabs and are the best!
