On Your Mark, Get Set, GO!!

A few months ago, my husband's aunt commissioned me to make a baby quilt for a family friend. When I saw the Hot Wheels Speed Club kit on sale, I knew it would be perfect!

Yes, I DID get the kit from the Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group! (Be sure to join that group so you can get great deals too!) The kit even came in this fun wheel-shaped box! (There are a few kits left HERE.) Inside was all the Hot Wheels fabric from Riley Blake Designs to make the Wheel Life quilt by Kelli Fannin.

I think the cutting might have taken longer than the sewing! There were a lot of pieces! I did all the piecing with Aurifil 50wt thread

The pattern has lots of stitch-n-flip corners, meaning I got to use my favorite sewing machine laser! (From HERE or HERE.) No drawing lines from corner to corner!

Once the top was done, I took it with me to my mom's house over Thanksgiving so I could use her longarm to quilt it!

I used a light yellow Signature thread to freehand quilt horizontal lines back and forth. I made them just wavy enough to sometimes cross over each other.

You can get a peek at the racing cars fleece fabric I got from JoAnn that I used for the back in this photo too!

I used Warm & White batting for this one since there was a lot of white background fabric.

I machine sewed the binding on at my mom's house too. (Tutorial HERE.) We have the same sewing machine!

I even remembered to sew on one of my labels!

Once finished, we took it to the local race track for a few photos!

I love the texture that the quilting created!

Of course I changed up one thing about the pattern. (Pattern designers are always having to do things their own way! Lol!) The pattern has all three cars facing to the right, but I switched it up and made the middle car to go the left.

And there two mistakes in the piecing to keep me humble. The first was in a background piece. I sewed the wrong side of the fabric, but to fix it meant I had to add another triangle piece of background fabric. So there's one extra seam where there shouldn't be one.

And the second is that one of the pieces of fabric in the bottom car got sewn in upside down. Neither mistake is noticeable unless I point them out, so I just won't point them out in the photos!

The back is SO snuggly! I love using fleece or minky on the back of baby quilts!

We left the race track and went straight to deliver the quilt to my husband's aunt so she would have it for the upcoming baby shower.

This was a really fun quilt to make, and I hope it brings lots of snuggles and memories for the new baby boy!
