Citified Blog Tour

Welcome to my stop on the Citified Blog Tour!

Ebb and Flow quilt made with Citified batik fabrics

Citified is the fourth signature line from Sherry of Powered by Quilting, and I jumped at the chance to make something with this collection!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

The Citified fabrics are from Island Batik, and are available at quilt shops right now! (There are a few available HERE.) I absolutely love sewing with batiks! They don't fray like regular quilting cottons, they don't have a right or wrong side (both sides are great!), they don't shrink as much as regular quilting cotton, and they come in the best saturated colors!

The collection is a mix of purples, oranges, blues, and yellows, and I just couldn't think of anything other than a sunset! And when the fabric tells you what it wants to be, I've learned to listen!

Instead of making one of my own patterns, I picked the Ebb and Flow quilt pattern by Penelope Handmade. I love how the simple design really lets the fabric be the star of the show!

However, when cutting my fabrics, I had an immediate problem. I had received a mix of fabric sizes, and several of the fabrics had significantly less than what the pattern required! A bit of quilt math revealed that I could still indeed make the quilt, just at a smaller size with a slightly different construction method. I carried on!

It was fun to see how the quilt progressed as I added each fabric!

I stayed up after my boys went to bed one night this week to sew the quilt top together. Then two of my boys were up before the sunrise, so I enlisted their help to take a sunrise photo! (Maybe the sunset quilt was meant to be a sunrise quilt??)

I used some more of the fabrics to make a scrappy quilt back, then pin basted the sandwich with Warm & Natural batting

Using a Sewline Air Erasable pen to mark quilting lines on my Ebb and Flow quilt made with Citified batik fabrics

Next, I used my favorite marking pen - the Sewline Air Erasable pen - to freehand a curved line across the quilt top from left to right that mimicked the rise and fall of the quilt design. The ink disappears in just a couple hours!

Walking foot quilting lines on my Ebb and Flow quilt made with Citified batik fabrics

I put my walking foot on my machine and loaded it with 50wt Aurifil #2000 Light Sand. I sewed right on top of the curved line I drew, then used the left side of my walking foot along the previously quilted line to continue quilting the whole quilt.

Machine quilt binding on my Ebb and Flow quilt made with Citified batik fabrics

I used one of the orange fabrics to cut 2 1/4" strips for the binding, then machine sewed it on (tutorial HERE). I remembered to sew in one of my satin quilt labels during the victory lap too!

Then the next morning, I enlisted my boys to attempt another sunrise photo, but it was cold, windy, and raining! What a difference a day makes in Missouri!

I really love how this little quilt turned out! It's about 26" x 30" and would make a great modern baby quilt to gift to a friend!

  1. Love this quilt - so effective. Of course, you know the rule, when you stay up late they get up early....until puberty!

  2. Congratulations on the quilt top. Just wanted you to know that photo #1 is stumming. That sunset shining through is the best!
