A Slice of Summer

I've been working on several summer themed projects lately! There's just something about the longer days, warmer weather, and green grass that puts me in the mood to sew fun patterns in bright colors!

This month, I finished my 100th quilt of all time! But the Island Batik fabric I used is still a secret until it's released this fall, so I can't share any pictures of it yet! (The pattern is my Snowfall quilt.) After that, I was excited to start on a project that I could share! (Here are a few of the sneak peeks I shared on Instagram and Facebook of the secret quilt.)

  

This month's challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors is "Curvalicious Curves." I've wanted to make my Sliced quilt in batiks for quite some time, so I was excited it was finally time to move that to the top of the list!

The specific Island Batik fabrics I used are:

Flesh - Cat Scratch in Watermelon

Seeds - Marble in Charcoal

Inner Rind - Cherry Blossom in Lime from the Empress Garden collection

Outer Rind - Ginko Leaf in Chameleon from the Empress Garden collection

Background - Cherio in Ocean

Backing - a yellow/lime-colored Island Batik fabric I picked up at my local quilt shop, but I didn't write down the name!

Binding - Cherio in Ocean

For this mini 30" version of the pattern, I used a bright blue as the background fabric instead of the white I've used on previous versions. I love how it pops with the other colors!

I also used a new batting that I discovered at Quilt Market - it's still an 80/20 cotton/poly batting like I'm used to, but it's by The Warm Co. (I used the same batting in the 100th quilt too). The batting is denser than the Fairfield brand I usually use. It is super soft, thin, and quilts beautifully. The batting feels heavier than the other brand, but I didn't actually weigh it. I just got a roll of each brand, so I'm well-stocked on batting for awhile!

I pieced and quilted the quilt with Aurifil 50wt thread. For piecing, I used Natural White (#2021) because it's what was already threaded on my machine from the last quilt. For quilting, I switched to Dark Red Orange (#2255) and used my new Janome walking foot on my Juki TL-2010Q to quilt diagonal lines (the quilting I used on the Sliced quilt I made for Moda).

This is my fourth time making my Sliced quilt (here's the first and second and third). I love each one just as much (if not more!) than the one before!
