Hydra quilt pattern release!

Out of all my new pattern releases happening in conjunction with Quilt Market (just 14 more days!), Hydra is my favorite!!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

Hydra started with this A-M-A-Z-I-N-G bundle of Blue Sea fabrics from Island Batik. (Blue Sea will be available for shops to order at Spring Quilt Market, and will ship later in the year. Be sure to tell your favorite quilt shop to order it along with the Hydra pattern!)

As soon as I saw the fabric, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it! Isn't that octopus fabric so cool?!?!

I had just finished up the Pineapple Twist pattern, and as usual, I had a dozen other variations running through my head. One of those was a mermaid quilt, and thus, Hydra was born!

Hydra starts by making the scales.

Then the quilt is assembled in a quilt-as-you-go method so once the rows are sewn together, the whole quilt is DONE! Quilted and everything!

I made mine on my longarm, but the pattern is written for a domestic sewing machine. Either way works great!

On my longarm, I finally had an excuse to upgrade my 1989 Gammill with a horizontal channel lock! It was a whopping $5 from Home Depot, and it worked fantastic!!

The quilt feels heavier than a typical quilt, but you could very easily turn this into an actual weighted quilt by adding the poly beads into the scales!

These fabrics were perfect for a mermaid, but can you imagine making it in greens to make a dragon or lizard quilt?!? What fun that would be for a boy! Or what about all grays for a shark or knight in shining armor? You could even choose fabrics that would make it look like fish scales!

If you want to stick with mermaids, there are SO many great mermaid fabrics out right now! Choosing solid fabrics in blues and purples or purples and pinks would be fabulous too!

Since the scales are two-sided, it really doesn't matter which way is up. The scales just flip over to the other side and the quilt looks just the same!

This quilt has Hobbs Bleached Cotton batting inside, and it is made with 50wt Aurifil #2581 Dark Dusty Grape.

The quilt description on the back of the pattern is: Hydra uses fabric in a fun way to create a textured quilt sure to make any mermaid lover smile! Batiks, prints, solids - they all look great! Change up the colors to make a dragon, lizard, shark, fish, or knight in shining armor quilt! This advanced beginner pattern is assembled in a quilt-as-you-go method and includes instructions for sizes mini to queen.

The mini version would make a fantastic pillow!
