One goal that I have when designing quilts is to make them fun! This Hydra pillow definitely fits that description! It has 3-D scales that lift up! It has such a great texture that you just want to touch!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
This all started with a bundle of Mer-Mazing fabrics from Riley Blake Designs. I've made the pillow from the Hydra pattern before, but these fabrics were a bit different from that one! (See the other one HERE!) And I've made quilts from the pattern a few times as well. (See those HERE, HERE, and HERE!)
This fabric collection is more pastel themed, so I was excited to see how different it would turn out! I paired it with a Confetti Cotton solid in Lilac.
The patterns starts with 2 1/2" squares that are sewn into "scales." Then it's assembled from the bottom to the top using a quilt-as-you-go technique.
When sewing the scales down, you use a walking foot and quilt through all the layers, so it's quilted at the same time! I used Aurifil 50wt thread for mine.
I added an envelope back and bound it like a regular quilt. (I get my labels HERE.)
Isn't it so fun?! It finishes the perfect size for a 12" pillow form.
I made my niece a Hydra quilt as a baby quilt, but I think this Hydra pillow might make a good gift now that she's a bit older!
The whole thing came together quite quickly, and it makes me smile when I see it on my couch!
Ask your favorite quilt shop if they have the Mer-Mazing fabric, and you can get the Hydra pattern in my Etsy shop HERE!
