If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

For all of my QAL By the Sea blocks, I'm using an ombre stack of Kona solids and coordinating Aurifil 50wt thread. You can read more about those on this post.

The Setting Sail block is written for five fabric colors, so I got a little creative to try and get all my colors into the block!

The block uses traditional piecing as well as the cathedral window technique for the sails. I really love this technique, and just used it on this free bat quilt block too!

The pattern is written to use ribbon to make the flag at the top of the mast. This is super clever, and I really love the 3-D element, but I didn't have any ribbon that was the right size or color, so I just cut the shape from fabric with Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 on it so that I could applique it down.

I took a couple other creative liberties too. I decided to not add the embroidered stitches for the ropes, the button at the top of the mast, or the boat name to the side. (Although, I really considered adding "Slice of Pi" for the name!) I'm hoping my quilt turns out a bit more modern, and I felt like the block was just the right amount of finished without those extra elements. (I might change my mind once I get all the blocks together though!) In order to use all of my fabric colors in this block, I decided to add three small dime-sized portholes. Again, I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 and straight stitched just inside the raw edge.

I pieced the whole block with 50wt Aurifil #2021 White, and used that to stitch down the sails too. Then I switched to 50wt Aurifil #5006 Light Turquoise to stitch down my flag and portholes.

AND I used the "right" color of Kona White this time! I'm hoping to find a little time this week to re-do the two blocks that I used a different white (this one and this one). I'm so happy to have FINALLY figured out which was which!

  4. Such a great boat. I like the turquoise colors and the little windows (portholes) are a nice decorative element.

  5. Very clever embellishments! The portholes are super. The calm sea makes me feel much better than the rolling waves. I'm a land lubber!

    1. Oooh, are those Slice of Pi quilt labels too large to become the name on the ship?

  7. I do like your pared down version, thought "Slice of Pi" as the name of the boat would be cool, and a neat way to "sign" the quilt.
