I've actually made three versions of the quilt, so today I'm sharing the first version made with the new Colour Wall collection designed by Sue Daley for Riley Blake Designs. The collection will be in stores any day now!

Like the Exploding Heart quilt, this quilt uses quarter square triangles too!

The pattern includes directions for traditional cutting as well as AccuQuilt cutting! So if you have an AccuQuilt, you can use the 4" finished quarter square triangle die for the Flutterfly quilt! You also have the option in the pattern of using the 4" finished half square triangle die for some of the blocks and the 4" finished strip die for cutting the needed strips.

The collection pairs wonderfully with Aurifil thread colors Dark Turquoise, Light Turquoise, Shining Green, Pale Yellow, Light Magenta, and Medium Orchid. I used Aurifil 50wt to piece the whole quilt.

And I got to use my new-to-me Innova longarm to quilt it!! This is my very first quilt made on the new longarm!

You can also peek at the Riley Blake backing fabric, Warm & White batting, and meander quilting. I used a white polyester thread that came with the machine for this first quilt. (I might work up enough courage to change the thread for a different color on the next quilt!)

The hot pink stripe fabric from the Colour Wall collection was perfect for the binding!

I even remembered to sew in one of my satin labels!

The snow we got this week wasn't exactly the "spring-like" photos I had in mind for a butterfly quilt!

I'll just have to take some more photos once the real butterflies come out this spring!

The Flutterfly quilt is an advanced beginner pattern, and it's fat quarter friendly!

The pattern makes a 68" x 64" large throw quilt. You need 19 fat quarters for the butterfly's wings, 2 fat quarters for the butterfly's body, and 1 3/4 yards of background fabric!

  3. Hi Laurel, I love your new Flutterby quilt but am desperate to make the Exploding Hearts - but - it is too big for me. Can you give me any tips on how to reduce the size please, my ideal size would be 52" square or thereabouts. Is it a case of simply making the squares smaller? I have no idea how to calculate this. Have you practiced this whilst drawing up the pattern? I would love to make it as it is just gorgeous. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, April
