If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
Since I just finished this Halloween quilt, the extra backing fabric that I cut away when trimming the quilt was still on my cutting mat when I started this project. One of the cut off pieces seemed like the perfect length and width for a table runner, so I decided that would be the back!
I grabbed a similarly sized scrap of Warm & Natural batting, and trimmed them up to roughly the same size.
I laid a rectangle of Island Batik's solid black fabric where I wanted the eyes of the mummy to go. Then I laid a white batik strip at an angle from edge to edge of the table runner, overlapping the black fabric. Both pieces were right side up.
I used my walking foot to stitch 1/4" inside the raw edge of the white fabric, from one side of the table runner to the other. I wanted the raw edges of the fabric to show, so I just sewed the strips right side up on top of the one before it!
I trimmed the extra black fabric away from under the strip because it did show through the lighter fabric, but I did not trim away any of the white fabric for the rest of the table runner.
I continued layering white fabric strips for the whole length of the table runner and stitched them down using Aurifil 50wt White #2024.
It took exactly 30 minutes to sew all the strips to the table runner! And it was already quilted too!
I trimmed up the edges and used more of the white scrap strips for binding. Of course I machine sewed it on! (Tutorial here)
Now to add the applique!
I pressed Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 to a couple scraps of Island Batik solid white and black.
After tracing a couple random objects, I had all the pieces of the mummy eyes!
I placed the eyes onto the black section of the table runner and stitched just inside the raw edge with a straight stitch to sew them on.
I used both Aurifil 50wt White #2024 and Black #2692.
After just another 30 minutes, the table runner was done!
I love how the eyes turned out! They add the perfect amount of personality to the mummy!
The finished table runner measures 10" x 36".
My 4-year-old found it hilarious (as did I!) that he was almost a perfect mummy size!
This project was quick and easy, and yet so fun and perfect for the season!
I'm so glad I saved the leftover fabric strips! You never know when inspiration will strike!
Be sure to check out the Island Batik Facebook page to see what other great seasonal table runners and table toppers the ambassadors have made so far this month! I love seeing how we all interpret the same challenge so differently!

ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea. I'm glad the opportunity came up for you to make this quick and easy table runner. The eyes are so great. When my son was 10 or 11 he was a mummy for halloween. We wrapped crepe paper around him...a little too tight as he couldn't bend his arms and legs to move around well!
ReplyDeleteJust adorable!
