An Island Batik Christmas in July!

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I get two shipments of fabric from them during the year. Then I get to make awesome things to meet monthly challenges that all the ambassadors participate in! I have no idea what will be in the boxes ahead of time. It's just like Christmas! I just got my second shipment, so I thought I'd share with you what was in the box!

This month has been crazy. Just when I received my box of goodies, we were loading a moving truck to move all the way across the state! I labeled the box, and hoped I'd be able to find it when we unloaded the truck! (This may be just a portion of the boxes labeled "quilting"...)

"Quilting" boxes

Oh, and in case you didn't know, I'm also 32 weeks pregnant with our 3rd! So much going on here!

After a few days of getting settled, I found the box!

Box of fabric from Island Batik

The suspense was worth the wait!

Right on top was an Aurifil tote bag. You all know how much I love Aurifil!

Inside was a sampler pack of threads in various weights and a spool of neutral 50wt thread. Maybe I should branch out from the 50wt and try the other weights??

Also right on top was a "Brights" pack of 2 1/2" strips. I am so excited to come up with something to use this rainbow!

Next was a stack of 10" squares called "Paisley Dot Brights." Another rainbow of colors to play with!

I'll admit I wasn't as excited for the 10" squares from the "Wild Things" collection. Animal prints aren't my thing. Do you have any ideas for them? Please send help!

Next was a 1/2 yard bundle of bright colors from the Foundations line. I already know I'm going to use a few of these in my July challenge project! (The challenge is creating secondary designs from quilt blocks.)

Island Batik Foundations

There was a set of three one-yard cuts of checkered fabric from the "Check It Out" collection. I'll take ideas on using these too!

This five-yard cut of neutral fabric called "Parchment" will be gone very quickly! I go through neutral fabric faster than you can say "sew!"

Next were these two bright fabrics. Each is a two-yard cut. I love the deep saturated blue! It's called "Blueberry" from the Basics collection.

The second one from that bundle is very tie-dye like! It's a bit busier than I'm used to with all those colors in one fabric. It's called "Tourmaline." Other than using it for backing, I'm open to ideas for it!

I'm very excited for these three one-yard cuts of solids! You know I love solids! But these white, gray, and black fabrics have the same hand and quality as the batiks, so they will be fantastic to use side-by-side! I already want a bolt of all three!

The last fabric bundle is a surprise! It's fabric that's not available yet, so I have to keep it a secret until January! The secret bundle that came in the first box is going to be revealed very soon though! I can not wait to show you what I'm doing with them!! (Be sure to watch my Facebook and Instagram for sneak peeks!)

The final thing in the bottom of the box were three battings from Hobbs Batting! I actually have quite a few Hobbs battings on hand now, but haven't ever tried it! Definitely on the to-do list!

Hobbs Batting

From my rough calculations, I count 38 yards of fabric!! The next six months will be filled with amazing Island Batik quilts!!

HUGE thank you to Island Batik, Aurifil, and Hobbs Batting for providing all of these supplies so I can make beautiful things!! I can't wait to get sewing!!

  1. WOW!! Everything was A-MAZING! Do you think they'd want to 'adopt' me? LOL Have you ever tried a Double Sliced Layer Cake? Missouri Star Quilting Company has a youtube video on it... Super easy and might make a great choice for one of those layer cakes- probably not the animal print one, though. I don't envy you on having to move when you're this far along - I did it, 39 years ago... only we moved from Michigan to Utah while I was 8 months pregnant. My mom and grandma were worried that I'd deliver the baby on the side of the highway - she waited six weeks ( 11 days past due date) and came out perfect.

  2. You are one crazy chick doing all this at one time! You will come up with something for the animal fabrics - I have them too - a strip set not a layer cake. I did make a snowball quilt with my son with some animal fabrics (never finished as he lost interest), but that was fun. The checks I think can be used to create some illusion or “fake sixteen patches” - again not sure what I am going to do with mine - we will figure it all out. This is really going to be a big nesting time for you - settling in to your new house and preparing for the new one. Hope all goes well and that the next few weeks (or long two months) go smoothly.

  3. What a beautiful grouping. I would also struggle a bit with animal prints, but looking at the colors actually makes me think of a bumble bee, so it might be fun to come up with something that uses the prints in an unexpected way. And you are so good at doing that it will be fun to see what you come up with!
