Welcome to my stop on the Love & Kisses Blog Tour! I'm excited to help my friend Sherry from Powered by Quilting launch her first signature fabric collection from Island Batik! Be sure to read to the end of the post for an announcement!
I've known Sherry for several years. We first met online, but have met in person too! For a short bit, we lived just a half hour's drive apart! Sherry is a talented pattern designer and longarmer, and I am thrilled to be able to support her on her quilting business journey! Be sure to follow her on Facebook or Instagram!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
The Love & Kisses collection from Island Batik gets all the heart eyes from me! I was an Island Batik ambassador for three years, and I absolutely love their fabrics! The saturated colors get me every time! Add to it that batiks don't have a right or wrong side AND they don't fray! Total package!
The collection is a mix of purples, pinks, and aquas - my favorite batik color combo!! (Isn't the fabric a perfect match to my Oliso mini iron?!) The collection is shipping to stores now! I found some precuts of it HERE!
There are hearts on most of the fabrics, so I knew the fabric would be perfect for making an Exploding Heart quilt! As proof that I love this color combo, my original quilt that is on the cover of the pattern was made with a mix of pink, purple, and turquoise Island Batik fabrics!
The pattern includes directions for both traditional cutting instructions as well as using an AccuQuilt. I love using my AccuQuilt for this quilt! It makes cutting SO fast!! I use this die.
In just a couple hours, I had ALL the pieces cut out for the whole quilt! Binding too!
I sorted the fabrics into four different stacks so I could try to get "planned random" when sewing the blocks. The background fabric is solid white Kona. I buy it by the bolt because I use it so often!
I pieced all the blocks using 50wt Aurifil #2024 on my Juki TL-2010Q.
An afternoon of sewing resulted in a finished quilt top! The sun is setting before 5pm here now, and the final light was really bright the night I finished the top so I had to get a picture behind the seams!
I loaded the quilt on the longarm with Warm & Natural batting and the white and gray swirl backing fabric I keep on hand. I free-motion quilted loops in 50wt Aurifil #2452 Dusty Rose Pink, but threw in a few hearts too.
I cut a 2 1/4" strip from each fabric in the collection to make a scrappy binding. I rarely do scrappy bindings, but I always love it! (Tutorial for machine sewing binding HERE.)
I really love the finished quilt!
Now that you made it this far, I have an announcement to share with you!
I am going to be hosting a quilt-a-long for the Exploding Heart quilt starting in January! You can sew along with me as I make the quilt! There are going to be sweet prizes up for grabs too!! Sign up below to get the QAL emails!

ReplyDeleteSo, so many color combos give me "heart eyes", but right now I am longing to sew with mustard and purple, or maybe orange and blue--I am feeling kind of "opposites attract-ish", can you tell? This is a great pattern, and I think it would be wonderful as a charity quilt, maybe for The Sharing Place, where kids go to learn how to talk about the loss they have experienced.
ReplyDeleteLove this heart!!! I would make it in reds, grey and black!
ReplyDeleteLove the heart. It's a beauty. I really love all colors as long as they are bright. That said I always seem to head toward blue and some color like green or yellow.
