Tammy of Tamarinis and Kate of Kate Colleran Designs have joined together to create a new block-of-the-month pattern called the Sisterhood quilt! I'm one of thirty bloggers that's teamed up with them to make a block from the quilt and share my own story of "sisterhood!" There's a quilt along happening for the quilt too, which sounds like a wonderful way to sew with friends and create your own quilty sisterhood!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
The block I chose to make is named "Catherine," and it's located pretty much in the middle of the quilt mock up below. The pattern (get that HERE) includes the directions for ALL the blocks in the quilt AND three different final layouts!
I chose this block specifically because of the big open space in the middle. My mind immediately started brainstorming all the fun things I could do in that space as soon as I saw it!
I could leave it a plain square when piecing, but then quilt something special onto it. I could hand embroider (or machine, but I don't have an embroidery machine) a design to go on the center square. I could use an orphan block or part of a quilt panel for that piece. I could fussy cut a design from fabric. I could use a fabric marking pen and write my own message. My kids could use fabric markers and create art for the center square (what a great gift for Grandma that would be!).
But the one option that really excited me was to print my own little fabric panel! I have some Bubble Jet Set 2000 which allows you to use an inkjet printer to print permanently on any fabric!
First, I found the perfect graphic (got it HERE) for my block. After treating the solid white fabric with the Bubble Jet Set 2000, I pressed it to freezer paper. (I used the kind from my grocery store, but they do make pre-cut sheets that would work great for this!) My printer doesn't like just the freezer paper, so I cut my freezer paper and fabric a little smaller than a sheet of paper then taped it around all four sides to a piece of paper. Then I just print! No fancy settings or anything. It just works!
I found three solid colors in my stash that matched the print well, so used those to make the block.
The very first person that comes to mind when I think of the word "sisterhood" is my very dear friend, Laura. Yes, we have the same name! We recently visited an ostrich farm and laughed until we cried! Her husband is in the Air Force, and they move often. She lives by the motto, "Bloom where you are planted," so I thought of her the whole time I was making this!
A peek behind the seams shows how all those points line up! I'll be honest though, this block took precision piecing. I had to trim each unit to exactly the right size to get those points. It took some patience, but it was worth it!
The bundle where I got the image for the center square has several other matching sayings. I think it would be such fun to print the others and make enough blocks for a table runner! Or even a whole quilt of just this star block!
There are thirty bloggers and designers who each made one block from the Sisterhood quilt and are sharing a story of an important woman in their life as part of the quilt along. I've listed them all below, but you'll have to sign up for the quilt along to get the emails to see their blocks!
Let me know if you've tried printing on fabric before! (You might remember this quilt where I printed my own panel too!)

ReplyDeleteLove your block! I like to print quilt labels on fabric, easy and look great!
ReplyDeleteI was doing a repair on a very old quilt and used this technique to make "replacement" fabric. I can't copy the flour sack fabric, but the print came out pretty well (after a bunch of tries!) Thanks for sharing this. very helpful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
