Tammy of Tamarinis has a new GORGEOUS fabric collection with Island Batik called Savannah. I *thought* we were doing a digital blog hop to show off the fabrics, but Tammy surprised me by sending me a fat quarter bundle of them!! As soon as I opened the package, I knew they had to be sewn into a Flutterfly quilt!

Since I thought this would be a digital hop, I played around in EQ8 to recolor some of my favorite patterns to see what they'd look like in the Savannah collection. I LOVE seeing the patterns in different fabrics!!

But then I got the surprise happy mail! They're SO pretty!! The digital images just don't do them justice. I don't have enough heart eye emojis for them! (I found some precuts of the collection HERE, and there's yardage HERE!)
Since the collection has a few black batiks, and I got a fat quarter bundle, I knew it would be perfect for making the Flutterfly quilt!
My AccuQuilt made such quick work of cutting the pieces, and my Juki TL-2010Q on rabbit speed meant that it didn't take long to sew the blocks either! The fabrics are just so happy to look at, and I didn't want to stop sewing!
Aren't those little butterfly pins perfect for this quilt?! I used a solid white fabric for the background so the batiks would really pop.
Once the top was finished, I loaded it on my longarm with some rainbow Island Batik fabric I had in my stash (leftover from mask making!) and Warm & White batting. AND I have to tell you about the new SewTite Magnum magnets I'm using on my longarm!
On my old longarm, I used Red Snappers which are definitely better than pins. However, my new longarm came with Red Snappers that are very difficult to put on. I've tried stretching them, and they still really hurt my hands. So I started searching for an alternative.
Enter: SewTites Magnum magnets. Instead of pinning, there is a metal piece that you place under the fabric and leader, and then a yellow magnet that goes on top. They are extremely strong and hold the fabric very firmly. I really had lots of doubts, but this is actually about the 10th quilt I've used them on, and they have worked wonderfully! Even on a really thick minky backing!
Now that I'm convinced they're going to stay around long-term, I'm going to sew the little metal pieces into the casings of my leaders. Then I'll just have to pop the yellow magnets on and off! It will be so fast and easy!!
I float my batting and tops, but the magnets worked great to hold the top to the belly bar to keep it straight too! SewTites recommends one set of 20 magnets for each bar that you plan to use. I got two sets, and agree with their suggestion! (And you can use the code SLICEOFPI to get 15% off your order!)
When sewing on the binding, I sewed in one of my satin quilt labels. They are double sided, so the other side has my name and website. (I get them HERE.)
Here's a good view of the backing fabric. It's a bit like a wild tie-dye fabric! Such a fun one for the back of this colorful quilt!
After cutting out the pieces for the quilt, I had *just* enough fabric left to cut 2 1/4" strips for the binding. It was close though! Only slivers of fabric left! I sewed the strips end-to-end for a scrappy binding.
I can't get over how perfect these fabrics were for a Flutterfly quilt! Colorful, happy, and begging to be shown off!
