Island Batik sent me a fat quarter bundle of the Alpine Ice collection to play with for the blog hop. Alpine Ice ships to stores in April, so be sure to tell your local quilt shop to order it!
The collection has 19 fabrics: some in the blue colorway and some in the gray. It even includes some fabulous neutrals! (I think the dark two-tone gray dot called "Gun Metal" is my absolute favorite!)
Sometimes it's challenging to use the same fabrics in more than one quilt, but this time, I knew exactly the design I wanted to use for the second quilt! (And both of the quilts are snowflake designs!)
I started by cutting circles and rings from my fusible (I used Heat-N-Bond Lite) using an Olfa rotary circle cutter. After pressing the fusible to the fabric, I used the circle cutter to cut most of the circles needed for the quilt. The circle cutter can not cut circles smaller than 1 1/2" in diameter, so I had to trace and cut the smaller sized circles by hand.
It was fun to watch the quilt progress as the circles were added to the background!
Once the top was done, I pin basted the quilt with Fairfield 80/20 cotton batting.
For quilting, I decided a circle quilt needed more circles! I used 50wt Aurifil in Natural White #2021 (and when that ran out, I switched to White #2024) to quilt large pebbles in the negative space around the outside of the snowflake.
I didn't quilt in the middle of the snowflake since I had quilted it by stitching down the circles. I'm still not sure about that. I might go back and add some pebbles if I'm still thinking about it in a couple days.
For binding, I used scraps of the blue fat quarters cut into 2 1/4" wide strips. I machine stitched it on with the Medium Blue Aurifil.
I used the dark blue snowflake print from the Alpine Ice collection for the back, along with a white neutral to make it large enough.

I used my free motion foot on my Juki TL-2010Q to stitch just inside the raw edge of each circle. I used 50wt Aurifil in Grey #2605, Dark Grey #1246, Medium Blue #2735, and Natural White #2021 for this, as they were the closest colors I had in my thread stash to the fabric colors.
For quilting, I decided a circle quilt needed more circles! I used 50wt Aurifil in Natural White #2021 (and when that ran out, I switched to White #2024) to quilt large pebbles in the negative space around the outside of the snowflake.

ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fabulous! I have started to tackle my UFO projects. I finished quilting and applying the binding for the first one on my list. I have a little more than 1/2 of the binding to finishing hand stitching down. Then I will be able to check that one off. And, then start working on completing as many UFOs as I can.

ReplyDeleteMy quilting resolution for this year is to finally finish the never-ending quilt! :) It is a BOM that I started in 2005. It went in time out for a while because my skill set wasn't up to the blocks in the pattern and I got frustrated. I have been hand quilting it over the last four winters. Am up to the borders, so the end is in sight!

ReplyDeleteBoth of your quilts are glorious in the Alpine batiks! When I first looked at the circles, I wondered how you did that, but your tutorial cleared that up. It is like a huge jewel of ice! On my quilty list for 2018 is at least 2 UFO's...one is a batik bed runner that needs quilting and the other is a large Postcard From Sweden project!

ReplyDeleteHoly smokes, I fell for this quilt the minute I saw it. Totally gorgeous. Of course, you used the colors perfectly. I am definitely adding your blog to my Feedly list. I can't wait to read more about your work. I've already started one of my goals and that is to make a Patchwork of the Crosses quilt. I joined a group and signed up for a monthly package of papers and fabrics to make 3 cross blocks. I love hand stitching but I can see that this is going to be a huge accomplishment.

However, upon seeing your pattern, I stopped in my tracks--whoa horsie--this is a totally cool pattern, different, not to complicated, FUN,---I can go on and on. It's wonderful, congratulations-would love to win this pattern. Your use of colors is "spot on". To answer your question, I hope to finish a paper piece pattern for my sister this year. I'm amazed at how long it takes to make ONE block. My sister will ask, "How's it going?". I'll say, "Well, I worked in sewing room for 4 hours today and got 1/2 of one pattern block done". Really? ReplyDeleteOne of my resolutions, or maybe it's a realization, is no more bed size quilts. I do not enjoy attaching borders with a 90 inch seams or wrestling to square up a top that's 100 inches, so why do it? No more, this is my hobby and I need to enjoy it.

ReplyDeleteOh, man!! That is just amazing! I am so in love with your circle snowflake quilt. Normally I'm a needle-turn, hand-stitch kind of applique person, but this fusible project has me rethinking that. As for quilting goals in the new year, well, my main goal is to become proficient with the long arm machine I bought last March, and that's going to require that I crank out a lot of simple tops and FINISH THEM. Again, fusible applique projects like yours are looking really attractive!

Most are beautiful and I truly admire all these ladies for their artistic approach to quilting, but this quilt has ME all over it!! I would love to have the pattern! It ended up with me pledging not to BUY any until the end of the year or I had used up all my stash. lol, it will be the end of the year. BUT,,,,,, no one said I couldn't win fabric. hehehehehe

ReplyDeleteThis year I want to balance the quilts I make for gifts, for charity, for our family (practical quilts), and my passion projects--the ideas that come to me and I get excited about. After two weeks I've already noticed that while I've made kennel quilts and worked on gifts and finished up a quilt for our family use, I have not done anything that could be called a "passion project". I need to change that habit right now.

ReplyDeleteI don't push myself into resolutions but do have a plan for the year. To finish and gift a purple Labyrinth quilt for ds and dil, make a "super heroes" quilt for 4yo great grandson, and a beautiful gray and silver table runner for dgd. If I meet these plans I will be satisfied. Your snowflake quilt is amazing. Lots of work with circles and you did a fabulous job! Thanks for sharing it!I have grown to love blue for winter pieces. Have a blue and silver table runner to finish that I started this Christmas. Hoping I get that done also!

My quilty resolution last year was so successful (I finished all my half-finished quilt projects) that I'm continuing with the next logical step. This year, 2018, I will finish all my planned quilts -- you know, the ones you've already purchased the fabric for and have a specific pattern idea in mind. I've given up on ever keeping the resolution I made for four years in a row -- to organize my studio and donate everything I no longer need. It's a very slow process when you are a creative type. ReplyDeleteI love your quilt, it was a great idea for using the Alpine Ice collection. My goal for this year is to complete many if quilts I've already started. I just finished sewing the blocks together and trimming a quilt top from a 2012 mystery class I took. I just need to sew the borders on. Yeah!
