If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
The Hee-Haw quilt started late last year. The December Island Batik ambassador challenge was "whimsical and wonky." Even after much Pinterest hunting, I just couldn't shake the correlation of "wonky" and "the wonky donkey!" Have you seen the viral video of the grandma reading "The Wonky Donkey" book to her grandson? So funny! (You can read my December post about the quilt here.)
While making the colorful version using Island Batik fabrics in early December, the fun Christmas song "Dominick the Donkey" kept playing on the radio. I knew I was also going to have to make a Christmas version too!
I bought green, red, and cream fabrics that all had metallic gold in them from my local JoAnn store. I loved how the fabrics were less whimsical than the bright batik fabrics. I absolutely love seeing the same quilt made in completely different fabrics, so I wanted to do the same thing with the Hee-Haw quilts.
I finished both the colorful and Christmas versions a few days before Christmas, but just could not get the pattern written during that busy season. Fast forward almost three months, and I *finally* got the pattern done!
Over this past weekend, there were two sunny and spring-like days, so we set out on a donkey hunt to take the cover photo! Long story short, two days and four donkeys later, we finally found a donkey willing to model!
Annie is a rescue donkey from Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. She was such a kind and gentle donkey! The perfect quilt model!
While working on the Hee-Haw quilt, I researched donkeys a bit and found some really interesting fun facts! I learned that female donkeys are called a Jenny, and male donkeys are a Jack.
I immediately wanted to make a sweet and girly Jenny version!
I definitely hope I can fit in making a whole floral version using my Laura Ashley fabrics! It's so different than the first two quilts, and I love that! It reminds me of a group of gal pal donkeys playing in a field of wildflowers!
I think it would be so fun to make one with faux fur or minky too!
The Hee-Haw quilt pattern is available as a pdf download in my Etsy shop here. There will be printed patterns for this one coming in May! Edited to say, paper patterns are now available!
Both of the quilts I've made so far are the smaller lap quilt size. I plan to make the larger throw size with the Laura Ashley fabrics.
I can not wait to see all of your Jenny and Jack quilts!
Do you have or know a donkey? What fabrics would you use for your Hee-Haw quilt?
