If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
I met Sherri at Spring Quilt Market in 2017. She has the cutest quilt patterns, and I'm honored to be a part of her book launch party!
When I saw the cover of Text It!, I knew I *had* to make the infinity quilt! I can never resist math-related quilts! The book includes directions for an infinity pillow, so I would use that to make a mini quilt. And since the blog hop is so close to Pi Day, it was a no-brainer to incorporate pi into my version!
I eagerly cut apart the templates and pulled out some of my hoarded math fabric (Geometry Math by Zen Chic for Moda). This is when I realized I only had a fat quarter, so I wouldn't be able to use it. I stewed for several days about what to do. I just didn't want to use any other fabric!
Then I had an epiphany! I could just shrink the templates! I printed them again at 75%, and I was ecstatic that I could use my math fabrics!
I chose the black and gray solids by Island Batik. Did you know they made these solids?? (There's black, white, and gray too!) I love them! The thread count and quality is SO much greater than most solids. And they have one of my favorite qualities of batiks - nearly ZERO fraying! It makes them a no-brainer choice for raw-edge applique.
Armed with a glue stick and 80wt Aurifil in #2600 Dove, I was ready to dive in!
I first glue basted the gray Island Batik solid to all of the infinity pieces.
Then I hand stitched them together with Aurifil thread.
I used my Hera marker to loosen the glue and pop out the papers.
A peak behind the seams before I glued it in place!
Next, I used Steam-A-Seam on the Island Batik black solid, traced, and cut out the numbers. (Do you see those scissors?? They are my favorite pair of scissors, and they've been lost since we moved over six months ago! BUT I FOUND THEM!! Seriously have been happy dancing for a week!)
Since I was using black fabric for the background, I decided to try out this Hobbs black batting. It's always a good day to try something new!
It was such a bizarre thing to work with! I mean, it FELT like regular batting, and it ACTED just like regular batting, but it was completely solid black. It was a bit like that purple ketchup that Heinz made several years ago. It tasted just like regular ketchup, but it was purple!
I made a quilt sandwich using a fat quarter of the Zen Chic math fabric in cream for the back, the Hobbs black batting, and the fat quarter of black math fabric for the front and pin basted it together.
I pressed the numbers in place right before quilting. I chose 50wt Aurifil in #2600 Dove for the straight-line quilting.
I used my Juki TL-2010Q and Janome walking foot to quilt vertical lines. I used the edge of the walking foot to space the lines, so they are just shy of 1/2" apart.
Of course I machine sewed my binding on (tutorial here). I used 2 1/4" strips of the black Island Batik solid for my double fold binding (that's my default size now!).
This quilt is exactly what the math fabric from my stash has been waiting for!
The black batting was a superb choice! There wasn't any stray lint or fuzzies to clean off before taking these photos. And no sign of bearding at all either! I will definitely be using this again!
I'm so excited to hang this up to celebrate Pi Day this year! (See my previous Pi Day quilts here and here.)
Another fun fact: When the digits of pi roll around through the middle of the infinity symbol, there's supposed to be a six in both places! So the middle square gets used twice in this number loop.
Want to make your own infinity quilt? Be sure to get a copy of the Text It! book! You can get a signed copy from Sherri on her blog here, the book is available from the publisher here, it's on Amazon here, and you can even find it at lots of quilt shops right now too!

I Love Love Love it! The concept, the fabric, the straight stitching, and the 6 in the center... perfect!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome, Laura! I love that the 6 is in the right place both times you cross the center :) Smart thinking to reduce the size of the templates because that math fabric is absolutely perfect for this little mini.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds great. And your project is amazing. I have a US address.
ReplyDeleteKathy R.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! Yes we have snow! It started Sunday afternoon and ended by Monday Morning. My husband & I cleared the sidewalks & driveway. The worst part is the mounds the snow plows leave in the driveway. Petuniakr@aol.com
Oh! My math geek daughter would love this quilt! We also have snow and another round of cold weather for the week. But that means I can stay inside and sew! hopsoncm at hotmail dot com
ReplyDeleteLove your ingenuity in shrinking the templates to use what you have! The project turned out great!
ReplyDeleteAt home we have snow, but I am on vacation in Florida so no snow here!
Sandy A
Your pillow is perfect and I'm glad you found a way to use your math fabric. We had about 4 inches last night and it is still coming down.
ReplyDeleteYour excitement about this quilt is catching; I got excited with you just reading it. What a fun quilt. I love it when all the elements come together and everything works out. Yes, we have snow like you do -- Minnesota got 35 inches of snow in February!! Want some? Haha.
ReplyDeleteGreat Quilt! I am currently working in the Foothills of NC... No snow where I am but got lots of it at my home :)
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt so much! It makes me absurdly happy that it worked out just right for the six to fit both ways in the middle. And how exciting to have found your favorite scissors just in time for all that cutting! All those precise cuts can really hurt your hands without the right tools.
ReplyDeleteLike you, we have so. much. snow. It hasn't gotten above zero in a while, but we finally had a break in the snowing yesterday. The harsher part of winter hit us late this year. I'm actually enjoying all the snow. :)
Love your quilt! I live in Florida so no snow here.
ReplyDeleteYes I would love to win a copy of Sheri’s new book! Her designs are always fresh and wonderful! I’m in North Carolina and we got very little snow, but bucket-loads of RAIN!!! I would have liked to see a littlle more snow :*)
ReplyDeleteI'm in Florida so no snow. It is raining this morning which is a bummer because I have visitors from Michigan, where they have mountains of snow. Was wishing they would have a perfect vacay. But it will be awesome by the weekend. I love your take on the Infinity block. Impressive.
ReplyDeleteI love your project! Your fabrics are perfect for this! I worked with that black batting once and it is great to work with, but...different. :) Please don't add me to the giveaway, I just had to comment how much I love this.
ReplyDeleteYes. We are giving away free snow here, (to a good home)

Really awesome pi quilt! So cool! I'm in Western NC and we don't have snow where I am right now anyway. Ya never know though! Enjoy your day! :-) :-) angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom
ReplyDeleteNo snow in my corner of Texas but it was 28 degrees when I woke up. Love your Pi quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis is very clever. Love this block. And yes, we have snow. LOTS of snow in Rochester NY.
ReplyDeleteLove you pi quilt! We have tons of snow and below zero temps! Can’t wait for spring!!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy how you incorporate math and Pi into your projects! This mini is super fun and so perfect for the upcoming Pi day! It would be weird at first to use black batting, but I'd be willing to give it a try...so glad it worked out for you. Do we have snow here? Do cats have furballs? Heck yes! We have way too much and it isn't going anywhere soon. Boo!
ReplyDeleteI love your mini too! No snow here in South Mississippi, but it was 28° this morning! All the buds from our warm 75±° last week will catch a chill for sure! Thank you for sharing, Susan
ReplyDeleteYou did it again!! Love your creative mind!!! And YES we have snow too---most of it blew in from the cornfield into a huge drift across our driveway that took my husband 2 1/2 hours to scoop out with the tractor and loader!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun project! I'm in Utah. We've had a lot of snow this year. The last couple of days have been warmer, though, so there are only a few patches of snow left.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love your pi quilts! I’m looking forward to seeing all the projects from this book.
ReplyDeleteWe had snow on Sunday (about 1/2 to an inch), but it is all gone now except in the shadows. We are expecting flurries again on Thursday.
ReplyDeleteI love this mini, pi day is one of my favorite days of the year, especially because we homeschool. I have some math fabric hoarded away that will be great!
Love your quilt! I have a pi day quilt I need to finish...thanks for the reminder that it's coming up again! We have snow like crazy. However, it's melting (in between storms)so we have a lake and a glacier on the end of our driveway between two piles of snow (and whatever ice chunks the kids can peel up). I'm off to look at your other pi day quilts.

ReplyDeleteThere's no business like snow business but no snow here!!!! mumbird3atgmaildotcom
ReplyDeleteLoved your quilt! Really nice work.... I live in southern CA. We have no snow where I live, but I can see snow on the mountains. Beautiful! Thanks, Lyn
ReplyDeleteThat book looks really great. I work with math so this one is especially interesting to me. We have some snow flurries and it is cold today, but the streets are clean.
ReplyDeleteOh Yes we do! About 21"!!! Thanks for sharing in the "Text It Blog Hop"!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt, and your solution for using your fat quarter! We rain...lots of rain!

ReplyDeletekcummings71@gmail.com
Not very much snow, but cold and rainy! I will be so glad when spring gets here!
ReplyDeleteNo snow! It all melted on Sunday. I'm loving your pi quilt! Just wish the giveaway was BEFORE pi day, so I could make it in time for my anuala pi party! 😀
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it feel fantastic when you find that *perfect* project for the most *perfect* fabric you've been holding on to? Your mini quilt is so very you Laura and I love the way it turned out. Congrats on a great finish! Thanks for sharing on Main Crush Monday!
ReplyDeleteYour mini quilt is so cool! Nope, we don't have any snow here.
ReplyDeleteI love your mini. No snow but it is cold out.
ReplyDeleteThankfully there is no snow in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.
ReplyDeleteWe had snow here on the OR/WA border, then it melted, and now they are predicting more snow tomorrow--just in time to keep me from making it to my doctor's appointment again. I was snowed in for my last appointment. I'm so upset about this, as if that is going to make any difference.
ReplyDeleteWe had a little over 2 feet of snow a couple of weeks ago but it has mostly melted now.
ReplyDeleteI love math and quilting. Your mini quilt is singing to me.
Love your pi quilt. No snow here in sweet home Alabama. Adillman3@gmail.com
ReplyDeletewe have snow and it has been very cold here. Good quilting weather
ReplyDeleteDon't you love it when a plan comes together? What a great quilt! There is more snow here than we've had in years! There are huge snow banks everywhere.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! My granddaughter would love your quilt! I live in Florida, so no snow. Thank goodness!
ReplyDeleteWe had 3 inches Sunday But although we have had a really lousy winter with icy roads and very cold we haven’t had much snow for several years every since we bought a snow blower. 3 years ago. I love all your work and find this book interesting. Drhodes9@cox.net
ReplyDeleteWe have only a dusting of snow. Enough for me. Love your project.
ReplyDeleteNo snow for us. (Plano, TX) Great quilt, brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI love your infinity pi! So much fun. We have snow here near Philadelphia, but luckily only 4 inches at a time!
ReplyDeleteWe do not have snow at the moment. This has been the craziest winter in the Pacific Northwest!
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea!!! We have snow and we are getting much more snow this weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteNo, we finally have sunshine in Tennessee! So over all the rainy days!! Love this mini quilt and your design elements! May be something for my engineering student grandson!!!
ReplyDeleteNo snow in NC. I have to try and make this quilt for my niece in love!
ReplyDeleteNo snow here in Mississippi...and I am glad. Love your small quilt! Thank you for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWe got a foot of snow Monday with more on the way Sunday. Ugh! If you love Pi and own an embroidery machine check out this design from Urban Threads: https://urbanthreads.com/products.aspx?productid=UT3125. It’s the numbers of Pi in the shape of the symbol of Pi. I’ve used it and it’s really cute. By the way, I homeschooled my 3 children too. We had so much fun and learned sooo much. Great decision to homeschool your children!
ReplyDeleteLove your new Pi Quilt!! It is raining here, so all our snow has melted...the mountains are looking to get 3-4 more feet of snow this week!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! So different! No snow here in Texas, but it got below freezing last night and the two nights before! Brrrrrrrrrrrr.
ReplyDeleteyoyopattycakes @ hotmail dot com
It's almost PI day, too! This is brilliant! We have a covering of snow and it is very cold. thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteThankfully no we do not have snow like you! Love your Pi wall hanging, it's awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt for YOU to make. LOL. I love it, the design is perfect also.
ReplyDeleteLove it! Perfect choices for your math fabric. I love your comments about the black batting-- it would take a little getting used to, but such a great option to have.
ReplyDeleteYou have the patience of a saint and I love the project. No snow here in the AZ valley of the sun unless you're in the mountains.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win a book of this lovely projects. I am from northern Germany. No snow this year, perhaps we get springtime.
ReplyDeleteElke
Snow in the forecast but none on the ground, there’s hope
ReplyDeleteWe have had really cold temps for awhile now, and the snow is piled up 2-4 feet along our driveway. Seems I'm always shoveling snow!
ReplyDeleteno I am in the South... tornado's

ReplyDeleteNo snow here (in Atlanta) but we're about to float away due to all of the rain we've had the last 6 or 8 weeks. Now our cabin in Northern Minnesota is buried in the white stuff.
ReplyDeletekaylace@bellsouth.net
What a fun little quilt! No snow here - just a lot of rain
ReplyDeleteWow! That quilt looks awesome :)
ReplyDeleteand yes, we still have snow on the ground...
rach62803 at yahoo dot com
Do we have snow you ask??? I wonder if it will ever go away and more coming tomorrow. A year ago yesterday my husband went for his first bike ride! What a difference a year makes. Thanks for the chance to win the book. I love anything to do with text fabric or quilts with text on them.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is so fun! I love seeing your math-themed quilts! I'm glad you had the idea to shrink your templates so that you could use your math background fabric. I have those same scissors and they are also my favorite!!!! Question--your backing fabric looks like it's on the light side; did you have any trouble with the black batting showing through? That's one thing I'm worried about with the black batting. (Also, no snow here in North Carolina, just lots and lots and lots and lots of rain.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful project. The stark black and white reminds me of a snowy night....something that we do not have right now.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt. Like you, I love math and this is the perfect quilt to celebrate Pi day. We don't have snow right now, but we've had several days where it has snowed recently.
ReplyDeleteWhat perfect fabrics for an infinity quilt! We had snow just the other day but now the rain has melted it. Yesterday felt like spring but I understand that tomorrow it will be winter again. Crazy weather!
ReplyDeletelove your project
ReplyDeleteGreat project!
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt. It's so perfect for you! Love the idea of adding text to a quilt. So cool. Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win the book. Yes, there is snow in MN!
ReplyDeleteNo snow in pittsburgh , pa. I love the infinity of pi
ReplyDeletesharongalli@gmail.com
Heee :) I remember the trippiness of black batting the first time I used it, too! and after yesterday's Bomb Cyclone, we sure HAVE SNOW. Lots of it. Lots of abandonded vehicles blocking up the roads, so very slow plowing happening today. Thankfully, the big Ponderosa we lost to the storm fell in a way that didn't hit any houses or vehicles, so it's all good in the end.
ReplyDeleteOh Laura...this is just awesome. Yes we have snow, and we got some with the bomb cyclone that hit Colorado. Bot today, the 15th it is melting! Yea, Spring is just 5 days away!
ReplyDeleteI love so many things about your pi design! Adorable!
ReplyDeletethis is so clever--love it! We have had some snow but not too bad.
