Team Colors

Saturday, January 25, 2020

After making a Patrick Mahomes quilt for the first Project Quilting challenge this year, I had to laugh when the second challenge's theme was "team colors!"

I considered making a Travis Kelce or Tyreek Hill quilt, but due to a planned trip during the week, I knew I wouldn't have enough time to complete it. Instead, I opted for a simple mini quilt using the Chiefs colors that I could finish in the time I had.

I started with the same Kona Poppy and Kona Corn Yellow fabrics that I used in the Mahomes quilt.

Kona cotton and Aurifil

I also chose Aurifil 50wt from my stash in colors Red #2250 and Yellow #2135 - both great matches to the Kona fabrics!

I started the quilt by pressing Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 to the yellow fabric, then traced football laces onto the back. I didn't even print the picture - I just traced it right on my computer screen!

Tracing the laces onto the fabric

I cut out and pressed the laces onto the red fabric.

The size of the quilt was determined by the size of the Chiefs fleece I had left! I cut the biggest scrap of it I had, then cut the Warm & Natural batting and top to match!

Pin basting quilt sandwich

After making the quilt sandwich, I stitched just inside the raw edge of the lace piece using a straight stitch and the yellow Aurifil thread.

Next, I switched to the free motion foot on my Juki and quilted a small meander using the red Aurifil on the red fabric.

After about 1/4 of the red was quilted, I decided to leave a football shape amount of fabric around the laces unquilted - to make a "ghost" football. Yes, I really was making it up as I went!

Free motion quilting

I cut a few 2 1/4" strips from the yellow for binding and machine sewed it on (tutorial here).

I love how the ghost football looks on the finished quilt!

The pictures also show the kind of weather we've had! Snow!

A peek at the back shows a bit more team spirit!

Chiefs fleece backing fabric

Most of the quilting stitches are hidden in the fleece. I love using it for quilt backs!

For binding, I used the red thread from the top, but the yellow thread in the bobbin. I've only done that a few times, and I'm always super impressed with how it works!

I think this quilt will be a great addition to our Chiefs game day décor!

  2. Love your ghost football!!! This is an interesting Super Bowl with both teams sporting almost identical colors...crimson red and yellow/gold!! Good thing you had that Chief's fabric for the backing or someone might think you were using 49er's colors!!!
