Teal Mini Swap Quilt Revealed!

Friday, September 1, 2017

Beth of Eva Paige Quilt Designs hosts the Teal Mini Quilt Swap each year during September - ovarian cancer awareness month. The swap is a fundraiser for ovarian cancer research. Each participant pays $15, then Beth mails everyone a swatch of teal fabric that must be used in the mini quilt that you make. Everyone is paired up, and you make a mini quilt for your partner. Make a (mini) quilt, make a friend!

I signed up for the swap the day that registrations opened. I received my partner information and got sewing! (You can see the mini quilt I made last year here.)

The teal fabric this year is by QT Fabrics. It has a sort of batik look to it. I wanted to do a modern design, so I decided to pair some bright Island Batik fabrics with some solids.

The batiks are all from the new Empress Garden line. In addition to the teal fabric, I used a pink, green, and purple from the Island Batik collection. The solids were all fabrics I had in my stash leftover from other projects. I used Moda Bella 98 for the background - from the bolt I keep on hand.

I drew up the design I wanted to use in EQ7, printed out the paper piecing templates, and got started!

I love watching how the design unfolds as I go!

After sewing the top and removing the paper, I pin basted it using the teal ribbon fabric from my local quilt shop for the backing and Warm 100 batting from The Warm Co.

I had perfectly matched Aurifil 50wt thread for each quadrant! Aurifil Light Jade #1148, Aurifil Shining Green #5017, Aurifil Medium Lavender #2540, and Aurifil Light Magenta #2588.

I decided to use my walking foot to quilt straight lines in each quadrant that would highlight the star design in the middle. Instead of burying all the threads, I just backstitched at each start and stop. Cheating? Maybe. But it works!

I had just tiny scraps left of the teal fabric, so decided to add some interest to the binding by inserting a few of the colors.

I decided to put the extra color near the teal quadrant to draw your eye there, since teal is the focus of the swap.

My partner mentioned that her daughter-in-law was an ovarian cancer survivor so she might give the mini quilt to her. Well, I didn't want her to have to give away her swap quilt without keeping something for herself! So I gathered the last of the teal scraps and decided to make a mug rug and matching keychain.

Now she can choose either the mug rug or mini quilt to keep for herself, but still have one to give away!

I labeled the mini and mug rug, packaged everything up with a couple extras, and shipped it off to my partner. She's working hard on a mini quilt for me too! I can't wait to see what she's been up to!

  3. I really like how you added the detail in the binding and placed it by the teal to draw the eye to that quadrant! And how kind of you to make a few extras so that your recipient can give an item away without feeling she missed out on the swap.

  8. Hi Laura,
This is just fabulous. I love the teal fabric, but I really like the design you chose to highlight it. I am sure your partner will be thrilled with the mini quilt, and will have trouble deciding whether to keep it or the mug rug and keychain. I know I would. That is just so thoughtful of you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  11. Backstitching, wow, I think I'm going to do that now--sometimes the pain of machine quilting is having to pull the thread to the back. I love your mini quilt, what a lovely exchange, your partner is very lucky to receive one of your quilts.
