The Waves block is a quick and easy applique block. It's just six pieces!
I can't wait to see your Waves blocks! Be sure to share a picture of yours in the QAL By the Sea Facebook group!
For all of my QAL By the Sea blocks, I'm using an ombre stack of Kona solids and coordinating Aurifil 50wt thread. You can read more about those on this post.
(And if you read about my snafu with my last block, I haven't fixed it yet.)
I use Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for all my applique. I love that it's sticky so you can position (and re-position) the pieces before pressing. I also love my Fiskars scissors for cutting. I have several sizes!
I used a straight stitch just inside the edges of each piece to applique the waves down. I did slow down, lift my presser foot, and pivot every few stitches when on the tightest part of the curves.
It takes a little bit of extra time to switch threads to match the fabric, but I think it's worth it.
You can really see the threads on the back too.
I think the block would look great in lots of colors! Mine is in ombre shades of aqua, but I think it would look good with all five waves the same shade of blue too!
My background is white (even if the lighting on the beach doesn't look like it!), but a dark blue background with white or light blue waves would look cool too!
Want to quilt along?? Be sure to enter your email address in the box towards the top of this post to get the free pattern for Block 7! There's still plenty of time to make the first seven blocks!

Love the block; thanks, Laura!
ReplyDeleteI just love this one, Laura. It is so perfect.
ReplyDeleteI love the waves. The background fabric would make this pattern really stand out! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for designing a great block. I’ve enjoyed watching hoe your quilt is developing with the monochromatic fabric.
ReplyDeleteThe colors of the waves do give the block a dimensional effect of foreground and distance. Nice block to rev up creativity
ReplyDeleteOH I love this it is so restful looking. A change in pace from the star block too!
ReplyDeleteLove the waves. Simple but beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI can't seem to get the pattern. I have entered my email twice now. Frustrating.
ReplyDeletePlease check your spam/junk/promotions folder in your email for an email from "Laura at Slice of Pi Quilts." The automated emails are working fine on my end, so you should have received it. If you still can't find it, please email me at Laura@sliceofpiquilts.com.
DeleteI was getting the same thing, and I thought it may have been because I was letting 'autofill' put in my email addy for me. When I switched to typing out my email addy the form accepted it and sent the pattern. Perhaps it is a built-in function of the email bot to not accept autofill? Just a thought. :) Love the pattern, thank you!
DeleteLovely block. But, where do I find the pattern to download?
ReplyDeleteHi, Lyn! After entering your email address in the large teal box at the top of this post that says "GET THE FREE WAVES QUILT BLOCK," click the "Send me the pattern!" button and an email will be automatically sent to you with the pattern download. Please check your junk/spam/promotions folder and look for an email from "Laura at Slice of Pi Quilts." Happy quilting!
DeleteI love your modern Waves block Laura! So serene and just fun to make.
ReplyDeleteSimple yet so pretty too. I love your fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very serene block, especially in your fabrics. I love how you can create an effective design with just a few curvy lines. Thanks.
