Exploding Heart #7 + TGIFF

Yes, this is the SEVENTH Exploding Heart quilt I've made! As you know, I very rarely make the same quilt twice, but this pattern has obviously earned its keep around here!

This one started out as a beautiful fat quarter bundle of Kaffe Fassett fabric from the Emperor collection. (You might find some here!) It's a gorgeous group with lots of purples!

I used my AccuQuilt to cut all the triangles, and went from "fat quarter bundle" to "ready to sew" in less than an hour!

I was quite skeptical of the background fabric when I was sewing. Up close, the fabric seems busy like it might take away from the heart design. But when you step back just a bit, the design on the fabric doesn't show up and it becomes a lovely shade of pinkish-purple!

I loaded the top on my 1989 Gammill longarm with Hobbs wool batting. The backing fabric is the softest backing fabric. Seriously, if you haven't tried one of the Free Spirit Fabrics wide back fabrics, you must! It feels like silk! I used one called Millefiore Pastel.

This was also the very last quilt I quilted on my Gammill longarm. "Kramer" has now been adopted by another lovely quilter. I'm trying not to be sentimental about it, but he was a fantastic machine. I have purchased an Innova longarm, so my next quilt on the longarm will be quilted by him!

I used Aurifil 50wt #2540 Medium Lavender to do meander quilting. I did the quilting a tad smaller than I usually do. The wool batting has a lot more loft than cotton, so the quilting can really add a lot of texture.

I machine sewed the binding on (tutorial HERE), and remembered to sew in one of my labels!

The finished quilt is SO soft and cuddly!

I mean, look at all the texture when I tried to take a photo of it at sunset!

I love how the backing fabric feels. I wish you could reach through the screen and pet it! It's so soft, and even cool to the touch.

I really love how different this one turned out than all my others!
