Exploding Heart - A Finished Quilt

I have SO enjoyed the Exploding Heart quilt along! It has been amazing to sew alongside so many people!

I've worked on two quilts during the quilt along, and I just finished the first one tonight! (Find the Exploding Heart quilt pattern HERE.)

Moda sent me a fat eighth bundle of Kate Spain's new Confection Batiks, and I couldn't wait to sew it up into an Exploding Heart quilt!

I used my AccuQuilt GO! cutter to cut all of the pieces for the quilt, then took them with me to a quilt retreat last weekend.

I finished the tops of both quilts while there! Well, all except the last row of this one because I forgot to take the rest of my background fabric!

I loaded the quilt on my longarm last night with 108" wide backing fabric that I keep on hand. I decided to use Hobbs wool batting for this one. It is loftier than my usual Warm & Natural, and it doesn't make creases in the folded quilt like cotton battings.

I quilted large meanders using Aurifil 50wt #1100 Red Plum, which allowed the batting to keep its loft and made a great snuggly texture.

After quilting, I cut 2 1/2" strips from the scraps of the Confection Batiks bundle to make a scrappy binding. I machine sewed it on (tutorial for that HERE).

The inside pictures just don't do the quilt justice. We are experiencing record lows in Missouri (hovering around 0 degrees Fahrenheit), and the temps are supposed to drop to -25 with the wind chill over the next couple of days. I definitely won't be venturing out for any photos then! I'm hoping to finish the other pink Exploding Heart quilt before Valentine's Day though!

Update: The temps warmed up a tiny bit, and I was able to get a photo of the quilt with our local lake - frozen! - in the background!

    1. The finished quilts look wonderful, but more than that, the pattern is easy and it is so much fun to watch the quilt come to life as it is assembled. I have really enjoyed this pattern and will use it many more times! I hope you do take the opportunity to make one.
