Glowing Lone Star Quilt

Monday, November 5, 2018

It's time to reveal another secret sewing quilt from earlier this year!

The Glowing Lone Star quilt is a pattern and kit available on Craftsy! I enjoyed writing the pattern and making the quilt top, but I REALLY loved adding the quilting!

UPDATE: Craftsy/Bluprint has since closed and no longer sells kits. You can purchase the pattern HERE.

The quilt starts with a bright assortment of Boundless Collage fabrics.

Strip piecing makes quick work of the quilt top!

This quilt was the number one reason I bought my longarm! It measures 92" square (queen bed sized), and I knew it would be too time-consuming and frustrating for me to quilt on my domestic.

I knew that custom quilting was the only way to do this quilt justice.

After loading it on the longarm with Warm & Natural batting, I jumped in head first to the unknown!

I started by quilting feathers in the outside border (the first time I've ever quilted feathers!). I used Aurifil 50wt thread #2784 Dark Navy.

Then I switched to Aurifil 50wt #5005 Bright Turquoise to quilt the inside border.

In the large background spaces, I really wanted to try graffiti quilting. Another completely new territory for me, but I knew it was what the quilt needed. I started by practicing with pencil and paper.

Then I just dove in. My longarm was still just days old to me, so we had a bit of a learning curve. I overcame thread breakage and tension issues quickly though, and was extremely happy with the results!

Aurifil 50wt #2600 Dove was the perfect color for the background.

For the actual star, I quilted it using Dorie Hruska's one start one stop method. I used several colors of Aurifil 50wt thread for the star including Shining Green #5017, Light Jade #1148, and Dark Navy #2784.

Since I was (am!) a longarm newbie, I wasn't sure the "right" way to quilt such a large quilt with lots of thread color changes. I would quilt one section, then roll the quilt a bit to quilt another section. Once the sections using that color were finished, I'd switch colors and roll the quilt back and repeat.

I was worried that skipping around to different sections was going to cause puckers on the back, but it didn't!

Once quilted, I machine stitched the binding on.

I absolutely LOVE how this quilt turned out!!

I am so anxious to get the quilt back from Craftsy! I already know exactly where it will hang - on the wall behind my longarm!

And if you're wondering when I was making this quilt - right in the middle of packing our house to move! (The finished quilt is inside that Craftsy box second from the top!)

There was so much going on at one time! I didn't get a chance to take proper photos, so I'm glad Craftsy has some beautiful photos of it! (Kits are no longer available, but you can get the pattern HERE.)

  2. WOW! I am absolutely in love with this quilt! I really, really, really want one! But I have the same problem you do. I only have a DSM to quilt with. :( The Lone Star is definitely on my bucket list but I'll probably have to make a smaller one. VERY INSPIRING!! And I am so impressed at how you just jumped in and started quilting on your longarm. You are gutsy!

  9. Laura, you just keep pulling these out of the bag!! Pregnant, packing, learning to quilt on a longarm, and making this beautiful quilt. I am so impressed with the quilting (first time feathers!!!) and the perfectly pieced top. I am so happy you will be able to hang this in your sewing room.

  10. The quilt is clearly gorgeous but this story behind it, really makes it for me. I'm in the middle of moving twice myself this year and my daughter 3 times too, and other big events. Some people wonder how you/we/others can do that but the quilting is the mind saver. It's the therapy in amidst the storm. It's the beauty behind, and in, the boxes.
Crackin' job, I hope loads of people buy the pattern and you can spur them on.

  15. I love this one, Laura! I can't believe that was your first time doing feathers and graffiti quilting - both look amazing. I hope you get it back soon :)

  17. OH. MY. GOSH. You are a brand new long arm quilter and THIS is what your "beginner" quilting looks like?! I am feeling seriously inferior right now!! It's just stunning. I bought my long arm machine with a specific quilt in mind that I knew I could not handle on a domestic machine, too, but I'm still assembling that beast of a quilt top -- and still struggling along with the long arm learning curve. By the way, you did a fantastic job of color/value selection with this quilt. It's difficult to get such a successful ombre effect using all different fabrics versus using an ombre fabric, and you nailed it.

  20. Is it possible to purchase just the pattern without the kit?

    1. As of today, no. Per my agreement with Bluprint, the pattern is only available through them with the purchase of the kit. However, Bluprint just announced this month (5/2020) that they are going out of business. I am one of many designers trying very hard to get the rights to my patterns back so that I can offer them myself once they close! I will definitely update this post if and when a decision is made on that!
