Creating for Kids with Missouri Star!

Thursday, August 12, 2021

Grab your popcorn and sewing machines! It's time for a watch party!

Laura of Slice of Pi Quilts with Jenny of Missouri Star Quilt Co. iron

I've been doing some super secret work over the past couple months, and I'm SO excited to share it with you today!! I've teamed up with Missouri Star Quilt Co. to make the Creating for Kids YouTube series!

Creating for Kids - nursery series videos with Missouri Star Quilt Co.

The first set of six videos launched today, and they're all about sewing projects for the nursery!

Creating for Kids - nursery series videos with Missouri Star Quilt Co.

In the videos, I show how to make a soft book, fitted crib sheet, cuffed nesting bins, fabric letters, an eight pocket tote bag, and a quilt-as-you-go quilt! The projects are great for those of us who have been sewing for awhile, but I am hopeful that they will be easy enough for anyone to make - even if they've never sewn at all!

The project has been so much fun, and I have learned a LOT!

Creating for Kids video set at Missouri Star Quilt Co.

In my business, I wear all the hats. But at Missouri Star, they have teams of people to help do everything! It was amazing to watch everyone do their part and work together!

Creating for Kids video set at Missouri Star Quilt Co.

There is SO much that happens behind the scenes in these videos that you don't see! It took four days of recording to make the six videos, and the air conditioner quit working on one of the days! So one of the videos (I won't tell you which one!) was recorded while it was over 85 degrees in the studio!

Fabric letters - a tutorial with Missouri Star Quilt Co.

This is the first time I've done anything like this, and I'm very happy with how the videos turned out! (Kudos to the team!!) It's quite intimidating to know your very first ever video tutorials are going to be put on a YouTube channel with over 750,000 subscribers!

Creating for Kids - Nursery items to sew with Missouri Star

Most of the projects are sewn with the Dream collection by Kristy Lea of Quiet Play for Riley Blake Designs. There are some Kona solids in the mix too!

I tried to sneak in a few pi symbols in the videos, so that adds a bit of an "I spy" element as you watch!

Be sure to check out all the videos! We're hoping to add to the series in a few months, so let me know what you'd like to sew for the kids in your life! There just might be a tutorial on it next time!

If you make anything from the videos, use the hashtag #MSQCkids on social media so we can see it!

Scenic Route - A FREE Quilt Block Pattern!

What a fun line-up for Quilt Block Mania this month! There more than a dozen bloggers offering FREE patterns for quilt blocks inspired by the theme "travel!"

I named my block "Scenic Route" because it reminds me of a winding road, but it was really inspired by the road sign that my boys call "the wiggle sign!" It means curved road ahead, but whenever we see one, everyone in our car wiggles!

Quilts go to the library!

Friday, June 11, 2021

Have you ever read a children's book and noticed a quilt in the illustrations? After having my first son a little more than eight years ago, we started reading bedtime stories - and I started spotting quilts in the books! It didn't take long before I wanted to recreate the quilts.

Fast forward to this month, and that long-time dream has become a reality!

Quilts from children's books

After months (okay, maybe years!) of preparation, I made ten quilts from the illustrations in children's books. All ten are currently on display at my local library for the month of June!

Olympic Rings - A FREE Quilt Block Pattern!

Tuesday, June 1, 2021

This month's Quilt Block Mania theme is "international." I admit, this one really had me stumped. International foods, international travel, the International Space Station...I just couldn't land on anything that excited me. So I asked my husband for help.

Me: "I need something that might represent the word "international." Any ideas?"
Him: The Olympics.

I should have asked him sooner! I love watching the Olympics, and the 2020 Summer Olympics are happening in just a couple months! (Yes, the 2020 Olympics are happening in Tokyo in 2021!) So my block is a fun abstract interpretation of the Olympic Rings!
