Little Man Quilt

Sunday, November 11, 2018

A few weeks ago, a soon-to-be first-time grandma asked if I could make a quilt for her grandson. After a few messages back and forth to iron out the details I got started on a quilt for her new little man!

The quilt started with a woodland-themed fabric panel, solid gray, and gray minky.

Even though the fabric panel was already made to look like a quilt, I really wanted it to be more "authentic." So instead of leaving it as is, I actually cut it apart and sewed it back together!

After using minky on a recent quilt for my own baby, I'm hooked! I want to use it on every baby quilt forever!

I taped the minky to my dining room table, then placed Warm & Natural batting on top, then the quilt top on top of that. After smoothing out the wrinkles, I pin basted it.

For quilting, I kept it simple by using Aurifil 50wt #2605 Grey and my walking foot to quilt straight lines on either side of each seam.

I finished up the quilt by adding the solid gray binding.

The quilt finished about 40" x 50" - a great size to grow with baby!

This quilt is my 59th quilt finish for the year!

This quilt is going to look great in the nursery, but will also get lots of use on the soft minky side!

It might be because I'm a boy mom, but I'm such a fan of the gray/aqua/navy/white combo!

Congrats to the new grandma! I can't wait to get a photo back of a cute new baby on the quilt!

Let me know if you have an idea for a custom quilt! I'd love to make one for you!

  1. I love the cut up panel! It is so much cuter than the full panel.

  2. I love how you sewed the panel, it adds a lovely touch to the quilt top. And I know that minky will be loved!

  3. I also love the Minky for the back of quilts. The only negative I can see to the Minky is that if it is in a fire, it melts because it is polyester. I like to use Quilter's Dream Angel in baby quilts because it is 100% fire retardant, but when I pair it with Minky backing, the whole purpose is defeated. Sure wish Minky would figure out a way to be fire retardant too! It is so soft and wonderful!!! You made a beautiful quilt that I am sure will be well loved!

  4. I can't even tell it was ever a panel! It's much cuter the way you did it. Wonderful!!!

  5. I never would have guessed that was a panel, Laura! I do like that navy/gray combination too! Love Minky, but I'm not really a fan of working with it. I have a stack of leftover pieces that I'm not sure what to do with. I may try to incorporate them into a quilt if it works!

  7. That fabric is adorable and cheers to you for cutting it up and resewing. I know why I would do it, just not so sure I would. I, too, love to see boy fabrics - not so easy to find. If I see a really good one, I do pick that up.

  9. All the heart eyes for this quilt Laura! The colors are fabulous, I really like that panel and that you cut it apart and sewed it together again. :) I'm sure the new Grandma is going to love it! BTW, the building in the background of your pics is the *perfect* background! Thanks for sharing your quilt on Main Crush Monday!

  16. I am glad to see how you put the binding on. This is how I do it, attach to the front and stitch next to it on the front. but most of what I've seen has been attach to the back and top stitch to the front.
