Louvered Mini Quilt

Sunday, June 30, 2019

As a member of the Modern Quilt Guild, I'm able to participate in a couple quilt challenges they do each year. This spring, Riley Blake sponsored the challenge. I received five fat eighths of fabric and decided to revisit a couple techniques from previous quilts for this one.

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

Several of the prints are from Christopher Thompson's (The Tattooed Quilter) collection with Riley Blake. I didn't want to order more of any of the fabrics, so knew I would be making a mini quilt this time.

I wanted to combine two quilts I had made before into one. I wanted the angled graphic lines of this one and the fabric twists of this one.

Twisted strips create texture in the quilt

I cut the pink, white, and aqua fabrics into 1" strips. I first sewed the pink and white strips together along one long side then pressed them right sides out.

Cutting strips

I then added them with the strips of aqua to make the center panel. Each time I added another strip, I started it just about 1/8" lower than the strip before. This caused the strips to remain vertical while creating an angled top and bottom edge.

Textured strips

I cut the solid blue fat eighth at an angle that mimicked the panel of strips, then trimmed the panel to match.

Trimming the angled edges for the textured mini quilt

I started with all the strips pressed to the left and sewed the bottom solid section on first. Then I sewed the top solid blue section on, manually "flipping" the strips over as the needle got to each one. I was ecstatic that it worked!

Adding textured strips to the mini quilt

I pieced the scraps together to make the back (and cut the striped fabric into 2 1/4" strips for the binding).

Piecing the quilt back

I pin basted the layers together with a scrap of Warm & Natural batting.

Then I used 50wt Aurifil #2735 Medium Blue and my walking foot to quilt straight lines parallel to the strip panel. I left the strips unquilted since it was only about 2" wide.

After a quick trim, I sewed on the striped binding (by machine of course!).

I finished the quilt in time to take some fun pictures on a local mural before submitting it for the challenge.

I titled the quilt "Louvered."

The winners of the challenge were announced recently, and unfortunately, mine was not on the list. However, that won't deter me one bit from entering again next time around!

This was the fourth time I've made a quilt for one of the Modern Quilt Guild fabric challenges. (You can read about the first one here and the second one here. I haven't blogged about the third one yet!)

I love supporting the guild and participating each time. I'm already looking forward to seeing what fabrics will be chosen for the fall fabric challenge!

  1. Sometimes it's not necessarily about getting in, but about the fun in the process, right? This little one looks like it was fun to create in a short amount of time. I love the photo wall; I need to find some of those around here.

  6. This technique fascinated me. I definitely want to try it. Your post title.. Louvered Mini Quilt.. is quite accurate and descriptive but it reminds me of mini-blinds. You creation is way too beautiful to have a name that recalls the chore of dusting those mini-blinds. LOL The straight line quilting pattern and color choices really enhance the mini-quilt.

  12. Always a sucker for texture on quilts, I love your louvers. They are so perfectly done, and at least the challenge got the idea made.
