QAL By the Sea - Fabric

Tuesday, July 21, 2020

If you missed the announcement, the next quilt-a-long from Partners in Design is going to be ocean themed! Today I'm sharing the fabrics I'm going to use to make all my blocks during the quilt-a-long!

The QAL by the Sea starts on August 4th! Every Tuesday, a new FREE 12" block pattern and tutorial will be released. The QAL will have 12 blocks. There are prizes and quilty friends galore! Find more details and how it works on this post.

Since the quilt-a-long is just two weeks away, now is the time to start picking out some fabrics! There are 12 blocks, and each one is 12 1/2" unfinished. It's really hard to know *exactly* how much fabric you'll need, as it really depends on your color and fabric selection for each block. This is a perfect time to use scraps from your stash!

A couple other designers have shared their estimates on how much fabric you might need. You can read their posts for a bit more insight on that.

If you know me, then you know I like to be a bit non-traditional. For my I Wish You a Merry QAL quilt from the first quilt-a-long with Partners in Design, I chose to make all the blocks with just a few solid colors. (Look back at that quilt HERE.)

I knew I wanted to do something outside the box with this QAL, so I'm going to use all solid colors in shades of aqua!

Ombre Kona aqua and turquoise fabrics

Aqua is my favorite color, and an ocean themed quilt seems like the perfect time to just go for it! I LOVE this ombre stack!

I honestly have no idea how it's going to turn out, but I know that aqua makes everything look amazing!

I bought a yard of each color, and am just going to make it work!

All of the colors are from Kona. From lightest to darkest, the colors are:

Aqua
Azure
Capri
Breakers
Jade Green
Glacier

In order to get all the colors, I had to buy them from two different shops on Etsy. I also have a bolt of white that I might use if I need to. I'll have to see once I get started if I need it or not.

Shockingly, I only have two colors of Aurifil thread in the aqua/turquoise family. After a bit of color matching with my Aurifil color card, I've ordered a few more spools of 50wt. (I ordered from this shop.) Those should be here later this week. I picked the following colors:

5007 Light Grey Blue
5006 Light Turquoise
1148 Light Jade
2810 Turquoise
4182 Dark Turquoise

I also checked to make sure I still have enough Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 for any blocks that will have applique. It's my favorite type of fusible, and I keep a roll of it on hand.

I am now super excited for the QAL to start! Are you going to sew along? Be sure to join the Facebook group to meet some other quilty friends that will be sewing along and share your fabric picks!
