A PINK Quilt with JOANN

Friday, October 7, 2022

Breast cancer statistics always feel so...unrelatable. Until this year. Two of my friends are among the nearly 300,000 women that will be diagnosed in the US this year. They have faced their battles with dignity, bravery, and strength. As a quilter, I feel compelled to encourage them on their journey by making quilts!

I've partnered with JOANN to make an all PINK quilt!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and you can make a donation at the register at your local JOANN store through October 29th to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their efforts to make an impact on research, health, and advocacy.

This quilt started like many of my quilts - with a trip to my local JOANN store.

I found pink awareness ribbon fleece for the back (my local store had the one pictured, but there are slightly different ones on their website), Kona solids in Baby Pink and Bright Pink, and many print pink fabrics too!

I did consider making another Exploding Heart quilt, but I felt like changing things up and sewing a free pattern designed by my friend Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew. (Get it HERE.)

Sewing machine laser

I got to use one of my favorite sewing notions when making this quilt too! My ViviLux sewing machine laser! I have a whole blog post HERE dedicated to it. You can get them from Amazon or from ViviLux. It works great when sewing corner to corner so you don't have to draw any lines!

Free motion quilting on an Innova longarm

Once all the blocks were finished, I sewed them into the quilt top, alternating the dark and light background blocks. I loaded it on my longarm with 80/20 batting and pink awareness ribbon fleece for the back. I used my usual for the quilting - a quick medium meander.

Machine binding a quilt

And also like usual, I machine sewed the binding on. (Tutorial HERE.)

Satin quilt label sewn into the quilt's binding

I remembered to sew in one of my satin quilt labels too!

I finished the quilt in time to take it with me on our family vacation to Minnesota earlier this summer. It's fun to photograph quilts in new-to-me locations!

This quilt is so incredibly snuggly with the fleece on the back!

Both of my friends are doing well after their cancer diagnoses. Neither of them had to have chemo, so that's great news. But PLEASE schedule a checkup for yourself! It just might save your life!

  1. Love this...and so glad your friends are doing well. My mother died from bc, so I am extra cautious.
