A Third and a First

The Exploding Heart quilt pattern launched in 2020, and four years later, there's now a MINI Exploding Heart quilt pattern! When I was looking for fabrics that would work well for the smaller version, I was immediately drawn to Tilda fabrics. They're from Norway, and more pricey than typical fabrics. This makes them special - and perfect for making a wall-hanging sized Exploding Heart quilt!

I got the fabrics from Missouri Star - and started with this fat eighth bundle of the Hibernation collection.

The smaller pattern includes AccuQuilt directions just like the original, and I used the 2" finished quarter square triangle die to cut all the pieces for this one!

Once the top was done, I loaded it on my longarm for quilting. I love using my SewTites Magnum magnets for this. It's super fast!

I free-motioned a small meander stitch for the quilting. This allowed me to avoid the bulky seams in the corners, but still quilt it quickly. Yes, this is my go-to quilting design for exactly those reasons!

Quilt binding by machine

I machine stitched the binding on like usual (tutorial here), and sewed one of my satin labels into the binding too.

Although this quilt is smaller, it still has the exact same number of blocks and seams as the original pattern. They both take me just about the same amount of time, which is really close to 12 hours total each time.

I love the quilt in this smaller size! The original pattern makes a 72" x 72" quilt, and the new smaller pattern makes a 36" x 36" size.

It was perfect for using these special fabrics, and it would be great for a memory quilt with clothes or other special fabrics.

The fabrics have these tiny squirrels and mice on them. They're SO adorable up close!

This is the THIRD Mini Exploding Heart quilt I've made, but my FIRST time ever using Tilda fabrics!
