It was exactly a year ago that the team at Free Spirit fabrics reached out asking if I could do a digital mock-up of the High Tide quilt using the then very top-secret and not-yet-released fabric collection Floral Reef by Tula Pink.
That mock-up landed in the catalog and was one of the suggested projects for shops to carry to go with the fabric. When I asked about getting some sample yardage to sew up the quilt before Fall 2025 Quilt Market, the fabric was sent at lightning speed so I could make it happen!
The High Tide quilt is a bit unconventional: it uses glue to hold it all together until it's quilted! (Yes, just regular school glue!) Tell the quilt police!
It's really a fun bias tape applique technique! I used the True Colors Mineral fabric in Opal to make the bias tape (and bias binding!).
Bias tape is seriously like magic! I put glue onto the quilt top where I wanted the bias tape to go, then just pressed it over the glue. And like magic, the fabric just bends and curves to wherever I put it!
Once glued together, I pin basted the top with 80/20 batting and the Deepdive Riptide yardage from the collection for the back. Then I used my walking foot to stitch really close to the edge of the bias tape, then repeated it on the other edge of the bias tape. This meant I quilted it at the same time it got sewn together!
All of this happened very late at night on the day before I left to go to Quilt Market in Houston, Texas. You would think I would have remembered to at least take a couple photos while working, but nope! Nada! (You can look behind the seams of the other High Tide quilts I've made HERE and HERE and HERE.)
This was my fifth time making this quilt - and right after this I made one in a different fabric collection! (I will share that one next!) You can get the Floral Reef fabric collection at your favorite quilt shop (or try HERE), and you can get the High Tide quilt pattern in my shop!
My photo helpers thought it was a bit too windy for quilt photos at the lake, but we did it anyway!
