When walking through Walmart a couple weeks ago, I spotted blank trucker hats for just $2.48, and I instantly thought about adding a quilt block to one!

I grabbed a pink hat and started brainstorming what block I'd like to put on it. (You can get the trucker hats HERE!) This would also be a great way to update an old or thrifted baseball hat or cover a logo on a promotional hat!
Many people know me from that one heart pattern (this one!), so I wanted to make a heart, but still make it look like a traditional quilt block. And the idea for a heart inside a star block was born!

The block pieces are TINY! But the finished block couldn't be bigger than 3" or it wouldn't fit on the hat!
Oh, and I chose some solid scraps in purple, pink, and turquoise that I had in my stash. Those are "my" colors!
After sewing the block, I decided that to get a "clean" look on the front of the block, I wasn't going to be able to just press the raw edges under.
So I sewed a 3 1/2" square onto the quilt block (right sides together).
Then cut a slit in that fabric (very carefully!).
I also trimmed the corners off just a tad.
Then I turned it right side out!
Exactly how I wanted the sides of the block to look!
Note: Do you see how the top of the heart isn't really aligned well? I hadn't noticed until this step, so I spent the next 20 minutes trying to carefully un-sew just that seam and re-sew it until I was happy with it.
I finally got it to be acceptable. But lesson learned! Check the alignment way before the whole thing is sewn together!
Then I sewed it to the trucker hat! Okay, fine. I pinned it onto the trucker hat from the inside. Which I could say is because I want it to be removable so I can change out the quilt blocks for different holidays or seasons. (You could even do that on purpose with Velcro or hook and loop tape!) But it's really because I decided it would look best to hand sew it to the hat, and any job that requires hand sewing is put at the bottom of my to-do list!
It was a quick project (other than the un-sewing and re-sewing part!), and I love how it turned out! Definitely something fun to wear to my boys' soccer games!

Adorable. Will try putting 3 or 5 across front of a sweatshirt
