For all of my QAL By the Sea blocks, I'm using an ombre stack of Kona solids and coordinating Aurifil 50wt thread. You can read more about those on this post.

The star block has six stars, and I'm using six shades of aqua! Perfect!

This block is all pieced (no applique this time!), but has a LOT of pieces! 110 pieces to make the 12 1/2" block!

I had a stack of white scraps leftover from making the previous blocks, so I used those to cut my background fabrics. I ran out of scraps partway through, so cut the rest from my bolt of white fabric.

I pieced the whole block using 50wt Aurifil #5007 Light Grey Blue.

Once finished, I headed out to take some photos at the lake. But I didn't even make it to the car when I saw something completely unexpected.

See it?!

I had no idea until stepping outside, that I had unintentionally cut the remaining background pieces from a different bolt of white. My bolt of Moda Bella White was running low, so I purchased a bolt of Kona White. Even under the Daylight bulbs in my sewing studio, it is very hard to tell a difference.

Different white fabrics

But outside, it was instantly clear the two bolts are not the same white.

I've seen others inadvertently do this, but this was my first time! It's so strange how it's so subtle and almost impossible to see the difference indoors, but once outside, it's so obvious!

So I'm sharing my mistake with you now, but I plan to spend some time with Jack (the seam ripper) and remove and replace all of the pieces that don't match the white of the other blocks I've already made.

Sigh. Hopefully I will have great photos at the lake for next week's block! (Next week is my block design too!)

  1. Okay, I still can't see the difference in whites. But I do love the way the block turned out and it looks so nice with the other blocks, too. Which white fabric do you like best: Kona or the Moda Bella Solids? Do you think the fray equally?

  2. Wow! I love this block but so sorry that happened - so frustrating when we don't catch the errors of our ways before we need Jack.

  3. Hmmm, I think I would start over making a new block! The differences don't bother me, anyway. I'd probably leave it. =)
