Rose Star Baby Quilt

Monday, August 1, 2022

This quilt has been in the queue for over a year! My friend had a baby exactly a year ago, and I FINALLY got the quilt finished! So I suppose you could say I was just waiting to gift it to her daughter for her first birthday!

It all started with this stack of fat quarters from the Nova collection by Basic Grey for Moda. I adored them, and they matched the style of the mama perfectly.

When I didn't finish the quilt (okay, or even start) before the baby was born, I tried to convince myself the baby didn't need MY quilt. It surely had plenty of other quilts and blankies from other friends and family.

But the stack of fabric kept nagging at me. It didn't want to be anything else. It only wanted to be a baby girl quilt!

So I finally moved it to the top of the list of quilts and knocked it out in only a few hours!

The quilt is made with all half-square triangles, so I cut them with the 4" finished HST die on my AccuQuilt. I paired the prints with a solid pink from my stash, then added a small 2" border of the solid pink so the star points wouldn't touch the binding. (I'm pretty sure the solid pink is Painter's Palette Rose.) I did not follow a pattern. I just arranged the half-square triangles into a star layout that I liked. I have seen similar star quilts made from half-square triangles on Pinterest too!

I pin basted the quilt sandwich with Warm & Natural batting and a pink dot minky on the back. (I think it was the Baroque Rose color.)

I free-motion quilted a double loop design on my Juki sewing machine, then used the scraps of the prints for the binding. I thought the loopy quilting matched the rose theme of the whole quilt.

I always machine sew my binding, and I added a label into the binding too. (Tutorial on binding HERE.)

The finished quilt is about 36" square, which I think is a great size for babies and toddlers to use and cuddle.

I've already shipped it to my friend's little girl, and it arrived just in time for her first birthday.

I sure hope she doesn't mind that it was a bit late in getting made, but I am so happy the fabric isn't nagging at me anymore!

Have you ever put off making a quilt?? Did you go ahead and make it? Or did the fabric become something else?

  1. Hi, Laura. I’m new to your site and new to Accuquilt. So glad you accommodate cutting machines with your patterns. Love this baby quilt. Need one for a gift soon and this looks fast and easy. My next big project is Exploding Heart. Looking forward to your future posts.

  2. Yes, I put off making my granddaughter’s baby quilt. My daughter was in love with the pattern and I wasn’t in love with it or the fabric. I got all the blocks made and then they sat for many months. Finally I finished the project to get it off my list. You know once it was quilted and bound I found it to be pretty. It just had a very looong ugly stage.

  3. Ha! I put one on the back burner so many times I had to give it to the adult "baby" for her child! This is lovely and the minky really does it's stuff with the that quilt design. Love your work. Thanks (and the sky in the pic is glorious!)
