Ever since I made this batik chicken quilt, I've wanted to make one with hot pink chickens!
So I was thrilled when Riley Blake Designs sent me the new Effervescence collection! It was designed by Sue Daley, and is a fun mix of chevrons, bubbles, and swirls! With hot pink! I new it was time to make another chicken quilt!

The pattern is an easy applique one. When you cut out the chicken, you save the piece you cut the chicken out of too. This gives you a chicken - and the cutout of a chicken.
Two chickens means you can make two blocks from each fabric!
Aren't these little chicken feet the cutest?!
You just peel off the paper from the fusible, put the chicken onto a background square, then stitch around the chickens.
I alternated the blocks to make a throw size quilt of thirty blocks. But I'll tell you a little secret: I still have more than 30 blocks left over so I can make another one!!
I quilted a large meander all over the quilt with a dark blue thread, then used a hot pink fabric for the binding. (Yes, I remembered to sew in one of my quilt labels too!)
This was a pretty fun quilt to make. I even cut out the chickens while I was on vacation in Minnesota a couple weeks ago!
I don't own any chickens, but I know several chicken moms that have been trying to convince me to get some. I don't think our HOA would like chickens in our neighborhood though!
Are you a chicken mom? Have you ever made a chicken quilt?
This hot pink one is my favorite! I'm trying to decide if I should make an ALL pink one next!
This Effervescence fabric was perfect for such a fun quilt. It makes me smile just looking at it!
Get the Clucks quilt pattern in my Etsy shop! It's available as a PDF pattern and a paper booklet too.
Now excuse me while I curl up and take a nap with my chickens!

ReplyDeleteLaura, when I was 8 yrs old my Dad took me to Silver Springs FL for a Daddy Daughter trip after my mom divorced him. I was always Daddy's Girl. He was my best sewing buddy. At Silver Springs we met a chicken that when you put a quarter in the machine, she would walk across the turntable stage, pull a cord on the jukebox to start the music as she returned to the turntable to dance until the music stopped. Then, returned to her nest. My Dad was so tickled I believe put 60 dollars in quarters in that machine. So chickens and Roosters rule my home in memory of my Dad. I will make a bunch of quilts with you chickens and if you don't mind a couple or roosters. Thanks
ReplyDeleteLaura please reply any time
DeleteAwesome chickens quilt . Thank you for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis will make a perfect quilt for a friend and a daughter-in-law who raise chickens to sell their eggs. Thank you so much for your generosity
ReplyDeleteA lot of cities (and HOA’s) will let you have chickens, but not roosters. You might look into it - it would be a great addition to your science classes! 😂
ReplyDeleteThanks. So cute.
ReplyDeleteGreat Quilt!! I enjoyed seeing a farm themed quilt. I grew up on a farm that had chickens, as well as dairy cattle, horses, and pigs. It would be nice to see patterns for the roosters and baby chicks as well--would make a nice mixed design for a quilt. mschambers
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern Going to make it using my scan and cut and then taking into embrillance software and the machine will do the rest. It will be a winter project

ReplyDeleteHello! We have "Chickies" at our house here in the middle of a hay field, too! I love your quilt. Thank you so much for sharing! I am a countrified city girl who moved from Minneapolis to southwest Missouri in 2010. Chickies was one of the first things on my list. We have three laying and one old red hen; even at three, we are keeping a few friends "in eggs." I knew that I needed a Chickie Quilt. Thank you! pj stitches! (It's what I do!)
