If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!
Make Modern is a digital only magazine. Although you don't get to hold an actual magazine in your hands, the trade-off is that you get way more bang for your buck! The people behind the scenes of the magazine are in Australia, so when you convert AU$ to US$, it's an even bigger savings! Each issue is around $5 US! That's about half the price of the magazines on newsstands. Issue 17 includes 11 patterns, plus many other articles and extras.
You can buy a single issue, or you can even get subscriptions so the magazine is delivered to your inbox as soon as it's ready! Check out all the options here.
I really love the gals behind Make Modern. I have really enjoyed the whole process and can't wait to submit more patterns to them!
Fruit of the Spirit is a quick and easy baby quilt. It uses fabric selvages to create the fun texture of the pineapple. The selvage (or selvedge if you speak British English) is the factory edge of fabric. It does not fray, so can be used in projects differently than cut fabric.

The selvages (and backing fabrics) that I used for this quilt are from the Fancy and Fabulous fabric by Fancy Pants Designs for Riley Blake Designs.
I used my vintage Bernina 930 Record to quilt the Bible verse Galatians 5:22 onto the quilt: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." In order to make quilting easier, I actually turned my sewing machine 90 degrees so the bulk of the quilt could be rolled up under the arm, but I could "write" the words from left to right.
The binding is a yellow from my stash. It is from the fabric line Knock Knock by Dana Brooks by Henry Glass Fabrics.
I really love this quilt! I love the texture of the pineapple (and have a few more projects using the technique planned!), and I love the amount of negative space for fun quilting.
The colors are so bright and summery too!
Have you ever used the selvages? Or do you throw them in with the scraps to be used as stuffing for cat beds?
Be sure to get a copy of Make Modern Issue 17 for the pattern!

ReplyDeleteCreative! Selvages made into prairie points? Really clever. I use selvages too, but usually for small crafty things. Needle books, zip bags and the like. I have a friend who covered the desk type chair in her sewing room, with a selvage slip cover!
