May Day tulip mini quilts with free motion applique

After making the jar of tulips mini quilt for the April Aurifil Artisan challenge, it made me remember that May Day was coming up! Do you give flowers to your friends and neighbors on May Day? It's a tradition I was introduced to as a young girl, and I decided to make some quilty flowers for my friends this year!

Before putting my scraps away from the last quilt, I cut a few more stems, leaves, and tulips from my stash of Island Batik fabric that already has fusible on it. Some pieces have Heat-N-Bond Lite, and some have Lite Steam-A-Seam 2.

I fused single stems with a leaf and tulip to some scrap neutral fabric. I spaced them about 4" apart.

Next, I cut a piece of Hobbs' Thermore batting to layer with the top.

Using Aurifil 50wt Black #2692, I used my free motion foot to applique each of the flowers. I stitched just inside the raw edges.

Some turned out great!

And some were a bit more....unique.

I trimmed each one to a rectangle and cut another piece of neutral fabric for the back.

I layered them right sides together and stitched all the way around (leaving a 2" opening on one side!) using Aurifil 50wt Natural White #2021

...then I turned them right side out!

Then I used the same Natural White thread to top stitch all the way around about an 1/8" from the edge.

Voila!

I popped them in the mail early this week so they would get to my friends by May Day!

I can't help but see the leaves like little arms waving! Lol! But that's still perfect for saying hello to my friends!
