If you remember from my fabric post, I plan to use a monochromatic palette of aqua Kona solids for my whole quilt.

Ombre aquas in Kona solid fabrics

For Block 1, I was able to use all six of my aqua solids (as well as white) and all of my matching 50wt Aurifil threads!

It took a lot of thread changes, but it was definitely worth it!

To applique the seashells onto the block, I used Lite Steam-A-Seam 2. I cut out one piece at a time, and used the "skeleton" of what I was cutting as a guide for placing the pieces. It worked great!

Using matching Aurifil thread, I stitched about an 1/8" from the edge of each piece. I back-stitched just a few stitches when stopping to secure the threads.

I love how this first block turned out, and can't wait to make the next one!

  1. Cool idea to use a monochromatic palette. Never occurred to me to use the skeleton of the fabric to help place the pieces but that's totally brilliant! Love your block.
