This is a great ornament to make with kids! There are no glues or sewing - and it's quick and easy! You'll just need one 3" foam ball, a 6" or so piece of 1/4" ribbon for the hanger, a bamboo skewer, and about 75  2.5" fabric squares. I used two colors and was able to get all the squares from a fat quarter of each color.

Note: You will see both the right and wrong sides of the fabric for this ornament, so I recommend using batik or solid fabric. I'm using red and green Island Batik fabrics from my stash for mine!

First, you'll need to put the hanger on the foam ball. Make a loop with the ribbon and overlap the ends by about 1/2". Place the loop on top of the ball.

Using the blunt end of the skewer, press the ribbon ends into the foam ball. I pressed mine in about 1/2". Then gently remove the skewer (you might twist it a bit), and that's it! The ribbon stays put inside the foam!

Next, add some fabric! Place a fabric square next to the hanger so that the center of the square is right next to the spot where you poked the hanger into the ball.

Place the blunt end of the skewer in the center of the square then press it into the foam. Gently pull or twist the skewer back out, and the fabric stays right there!

Then place another fabric square next to the first, with the center about 1/2" away from the spot you poked into the foam for the first square.

Place the skewer in the center of the square then poke it into the foam ball.

Repeat all the way around the hanger. I used just four squares for this first round.

Then just keep adding more squares and poking them into the foam. I kept each one about 1/2" from the other spots where I poked the fabric into the foam. I sometimes lifted the edge of the previous squares so I could get the center of the next square where I wanted it.

You shouldn't be able to see any of the white foam ball in-between the fabric. If you see a spot, either fluff the fabric there to fill it in or add another square of fabric to that spot.

Just continue all the way around the ball, and you'll have a fun ornament to hang on the tree!

This one took me only about 15 minutes to make! And that includes taking all the pictures along the way!

I love how it's a bit crazy looking! It has great texture too!
