Pack your Suitcases! Let's go to New York!!

I'm so excited to share this quilt with you!! Gotham Quilts, a quilt hop in New York City, has come out with their very own New York City themed fabric! When they asked if I would make something to show off the new fabrics, I shouted YES!!

The fabrics feature many iconic New York City things - rats, pigeons, taxis, bicycles, and of course the skyline! I knew it would be perfect for a Suitcases quilt!

The fabrics are a mix of grays, turquoise/aqua, and yellow. And the pigeon print! That one is definitely my favorite! There's even a panel of large prints to make pillows! (I'm hoping to sew some fun things from the panel someday soon!)

I used each print to make a suitcase in the quilt, and one print twice. (Can you spot that one??) I chose a light gray solid fabric for the background and a dark gray solid for the suitcase handles.

I also found a fantastic backing fabric on clearance at my local JoAnn store - it's the Statue of Liberty! (It shows out of stock online, but it was perfect for this quilt!) I thought I was going to pattern match the seam on the back of the quilt, but that proved nearly impossible. So I just sewed two pieces together and didn't worry about how they matched up!

I used my mom's longarm to quilt this quilt, and I tried a new-to-me free-motion quilting design - triangles! That sure was a workout for my brain!

But the texture was worth it!

The quilt has flannel on the back and Warm & Natural batting inside. I pieced the whole quilt using Aurifil 50wt thread, then used a light gray Signature cotton thread for the quilting. To finish it off, I used some of the scraps of fabric for the binding

Then we took the quilt downtown for a photo! (Downtown Kansas City, not downtown New York City!) Wouldn't this make such a fun quilt to remember a trip or to take with you on your next vacation?? Get the fabric from Gotham Quilts, then grab the Suitcases pattern from my shop!

Want to see what some of my blogger friends made with the same fabric??
