A PINK Quilt with Island Batik!

Thursday, October 20, 2022

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, also called Pinktober. I've had two friends diagnosed with breast cancer this year, so it feels a little more personal than in years past.

I've teamed up with several other bloggers to make quilts with breast cancer awareness fabrics from Island Batik. Be sure to scroll to the end of this post and check out what they made!

If you're new here, hello! I'm Laura! I design quilt patterns, and I'm a self-proclaimed deal hunter! Be sure to join the popular Quilting & Sewing Deals Facebook group where I post sales, deals, and coupon codes from all around the web!

My quilt started with a 10" stack of the Hope and Heart collection. (You might find some HERE.) It's a mix of bright pinks and blacks, and I paired it with a couple yards of Island Batik's solid pink and solid black. When I think of my friends, I'm overcome with love for them, so I knew a heart quilt was the best way to honor that! I picked the free heart quilt block pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew

I used the layer cake to cut the fabrics to make 42 hearts. I made half of them from the pink fabrics and half of them from the black fabrics. Then I cut the background for each block from the solid pink and solid black fabrics.

Aurifil 50wt thread #4660 Pink Taffy

This variegated spool of 50wt thread from Aurifil was perfect for all the piecing! It's color #4660 Pink Taffy. I sewed all the pink hearts with the solid black background fabric and sewed all the black hearts with the solid pink background fabric.

Once all the blocks were complete, I sewed the top together alternating the blocks. I had the perfect hot pink thread in my longarm thread stash for quilting! And I had a great pink fabric for the back from my stash too! It's an Island Batik fabric that I had bought a bolt of when making face masks.

Do you see those yellow things holding my quilt back onto the leaders of my longarm? They're SewTite magnets! Yes, I'm using magnets to load my longarm now! It's SO fast and SO much better on my hands than my Red Snappers. (If you want to try them, use the code SLICEOFPI to get 15% off your order!) I used the 80/20 batting from Batting Super Sale too.

All the heart eyes for that hot pink thread! I quilted it with a medium sized meander - my go to!

Sewing a satin label into the binding when machine sewing

I got to try a new-to-me product when sewing in my quilt label! These sewing clips are pink and are called the Quilters Perfect Klip. They are larger than the regular sewing clips which made it great for holding my label in place! (I sew my binding on by machine. See the tutorial HERE.)

I finished the quilt just before my husband and I flew to Annapolis, Maryland for a short vacation without the kids, so I threw it in my bag so I could take photos of it on the beach!

I don't usually have sand under my quilts!

This was a great pattern for showcasing the prints from the Hope and Heart collection, and it would be a great quilt for making to encourage someone you know that's on a breast cancer journey right now.

Both of my friends are doing well after their cancer diagnoses, and neither of them have to have chemo! But it has been a vivid reminder that regular checkups and self exams are imperative no matter your age!

So in case you haven't had a checkup in awhile, let me shout it for you, SCHEDULE A CHECKUP WITH YOUR DOCTOR! It just might save your life!

Thank you to Island Batik, Aurifil thread, and Quilters Perfect Klips for providing the fabric, thread, and sewing clips that made this quilt possible!
