Slice of Pi Quilts: Berries and Cream Quilt

It's always such a fun day when I get to play with new fabric! Jennifer Thomas of Curlicue Creations asked if I would like to sew with some of her new Berry Crush fabric collection from Island Batik, and of course I jumped at the chance!

The Berry Crush collection is a new line of batik fabrics from Island Batik (now part of Lumin Fabrics).

It's a gorgeous range of pinks and purples!

Jen sent me a 10" stack of the fabrics, and I decided to make a quick and easy half-square triangle quilt!

To start, I needed a background fabric, and I just happened to have a berry-themed neutral batik in my stash! The catch? I was just 6" short of having enough to make the quilt!

I was convinced no other fabric would work for this quilt, so I used the scraps and sewed a few pieces together to get the last 10" square I needed! (Insert that audio clip of "Nobody's gonna know!")

I made my half-square triangles using the traditional two-at-a-time method.

Just draw a line from corner to corner, then sew on either side of the line. (Normally I like to use my sewing machine laser to make HSTs, but it was challenging to use with these large squares! Drawing the lines was more accurate for me this time, but I'd definitely use the laser for smaller sized squares!)

Then just cut them apart on the drawn line and press. I chose to press mine to the darker fabric instead of pressing them open (it's faster!).

Then I set up a temporary trimming station on the dining room table to work while my boys watched a football game. Honestly, this step took the longest of the whole quilt!

Here's a quick cheat sheet if you're wondering what size of HSTs you can make from different sized squares. With careful sewing and trimming, you could get a 9 1/2" HST from the 10" squares. But I didn't want to try that hard, so I just trimmed mine down to 9" squares.

Once they were all trimmed up, I used my fancy design wall (ahem, the back of a vinyl tablecloth that's just pinned up on my wall) to arrange the blocks.

I let the blocks be pretty random, but I did try to alternate between pink and purple blocks.

I used a reddish pink batik fabric I had in my stash for the back and used my SewTite Magnums to put it on my longarm. Then I used a bleached 80/20 batting that I had on hand and white thread to free-motion quilt a large meander stitch over the whole quilt. Why? Because it's fast!

The last step was to machine sew on the binding! (Tutorial here.)

Yes, I remembered to sew one of my labels onto the back as I was doing the victory lap too!

In all, the quilt took me about 5 hours to make start to finish! It was just the type of project I needed to get a quick finish and make me motivated to sew whatever's next!

The finished quilt is about 51" x 60", so a great size for a lap quilt or baby quilt!

I took the quilt outside for pictures, and I think this might be the end of the green grass for the summer! The temps are dropping quick, so outside quilt photos will look quite different in the coming weeks!
